No, this is not a joke. Pride month is the time we, and our LGBT allies, come together to celebrate diversity, community and unity in the face of oppression and hatred. In the wake of events like Orlando, ‘religious freedom’ laws being passed in the US and countries around the world still punishing homosexuality with the death penalty, Pride month is just as important as it ever was. So it’s with great disappointment, anger and confusion that people woke up to find the hashtag #HeterosexualPrideDay trending on Twitter. The originator of the hashtag, known only as Sam, originally tweeted it in answer to the question: “Why do “straight” men and women go to the gay pride parades?”
The hashtage is being challenged with the usual avalanche of eye-rolling gifs. Feel free to post your favorites below.
