PETITION: We #StandWithTarget On Trans Rights

MoveOn has launched a #StandWithTarget petition to counter the petition authored earlier this week by the AFA. From the MoveOn petition: “I pledge to support Target and any other business that stands up for transgender rights and accommodates transgender people in their restroom use.” Sign at this link. They’ve gotten 26K signatures already.

  • Nic Peterson

    Make that 26,001. And counting.

    • Gigi

Moving fast. Close to 39,000 now.

  • hiker_sf

We’re a little late with this one.

    • studd55

Yeah trying to catch up to a million + fake email addresses is pretty pointless.

  • Todd

Done. This is a great idea. Let’s get 2 million signatures in a week ! Strength in numbers.

  • Dave_in_PDX

Done! And these are REAL signatures that can be verified. AFA is just harvesting email addresses to spread their hate. There is absolutely NO way of verifying all million+ signatories.

  • online petitions rarely mean or do anything. i can’t be a hypocrite. if “1M signatures” from NOM or whatever is ‘real,’ so is anything this website/thing would be. there were millions of online click-thrus for many issues i cared about greatly, and look at all the good those did.

action, not blog posts. have you registered a new voter today? i’m sick and old and sometimes can’t teach my classes to the poor kids i tutor as a result, but i don’t kid myself that when i’m sitting here blogging angry comments, i’m making a difference in their lives. that takes actual work.

just a throw a bone to you HRC supporters, isn’t this the one point you raised about my guy that was actually valid? unfortunately, “internet activism” has yet to rise to the full level of fleshy activism. i say this as a veteran of the AIDS 80s, feminist 90s, and a lot of other shit i’ve done in person, before it was so easy to feel superior b/c one writes an angry email to someone or someplace where it will never be read.

    • Gigi

They mean something to the haters who are crowing that they have more than 1 million signatures.

    • Disqusdmnj

Points taken, but it’s also good for companies like Target to see that they’re doing something and taking a side that their customers actually appreciate and agree with.

      • Jay George

I think we need the headline that says 2 million signatures in support of Target. People need to know that the entire US isn’t made up of haters.

    • Reality.Bites

Online petitions are the secular equivalent of praying for people/things.

I also refuse to “freep” meaningless online polls.

  • TampaZeke

I encourage everyone to join me in sharing this on our Facebook pages and encouraging our friends and family to sign and share.

    • Queequeg

Not on Facebook, but I’ll be spending more money at Target than I have in the past.

    • Jay George

There are currently 51,516 signatures. NEW goal – We need 75,000 signatures!

      • MarkOH

I just saw that. And this is the first day? Grand

      • Gigi

        89,751. New goal: 100,000.

  • My apologies, but I don’t do online petitions, ever.

    • Frostbite

What? You don’t want them to harvest your email address for future spam?

      • Gigi

Fake e-mail address. Come on, am I the only one who does that?

        • No way!

        • Frostbite

nah. i have my own domain. i give different sites different user names, so i can track who shared out my address, trash spammers, and click on activate/verify links if i need to.

        • easygoingmister

I just put a rule or filter on them so they go in a folder I can check when I want. Easy and stress free!

        • I figure if we know the main purpose of online petitions is email harvesting, there really is no point in pretending otherwise. Basically it’s nothing but freeping then.

      • That’s exactly the reason I won’t. Also, online petitions never accomplish ANYTHING.

  • Frostbite

Oh joy, another useless on-line petition to counter the other useless on-line petition!

  • Bernie Keefe

    So signed 31000 and counting.

    • Gigi

      Close to 39,000 now!!

  • bkmn

I appreciate the effort but what is really needed is a concerted push to get people registered to vote and get them there on election day. If we get enough people we can put an end to these hate bills popping up all over the country.

    • Bruno

Especially in North Carolina. In addition to the financial hits already incurred, if a Democratic wave hits the state, it can be argued that these laws are dangerous to pass in other places. Except maybe Alabama, where they don’t even know what a Democrat is.

    • TampaZeke

No reason to not do both.

      Not either/or but both/and.

    • There really needs to be a push in Georgia and North Carolina, both of which the Democrats could carry in November according to recent polls. That going to take a lot of voters registering and getting to the polls, but it is possible.

      • bkmn

And the time to start is now, especially with all the new voter ID requirements.

        • that’s another good reason to get people registered and voting in every primary. If there’s a problem with the registration, better to find out now than in November. (I was afraid the new laws where I live might affect me. Fortunately they did not.)

  • When MoveOn members chose to endorse Sanders, they lost my support. So I will not sign this. I will counter the AHA petition by shopping St Target more.

    • Gigi

This is important. Please set your differences aside for just this once.

      • barracks9

Genuinely curious. Why is this important? From a distance, these competing petitions read more like the cheer leading squads from rival high schools going back and forth, “We got spirit, yes we do, we got spirit, how about YOU?” over and over again.

        • Gigi

It’s important that Target knows that we support and appreciate their efforts. My business was once boycotted by haters and it was nice to know that there was support from the good guys as well.

          • barracks9

Well said. Thanks for the thoughtful reply. There’s been so much noise in my head this week, I haven’t been able to get any distance from things to weigh them properly.

          • Gigi

I know what you mean. The noise can be overwhelming.

        • studd55

Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar
All for transgingers stand up and holler.

(btw: one bit equals 12.5 cents)

      • Giving your name and email address to a political action lobbying group so they can compile lists and then sell the information to others is not important.

        • Gigi

Who said I gave my personal info to them?

    • Steven Leahy

      That’s petty as hell.

  • Stuck_on_Earth

I support Target and would sign the petition … but MoveOn’s advisory about automatic opt-in for their e-mailing list puts me off.

    • Gigi

That’s what fake e-mail addresses are for.

    • billbear1961

Can’t you just sign, get some emails for a while, and then unsubscribe?

Over time I’ve unsubscribed from quite a few things that were driving me MAD.

    • studd55

As soon as I get the first email from Moveon, I open it, go to the bottom of the email and click unsubscribe.

  • billbear1961

I wondered when someone would start a petition for our side!

  • Gigi

    Mine makes 38,581 signatures.

    • billbear1961

      It’s growing FAST!!

      • Gigi

        89,751 now.

  • billbear1961
  • Steven Leahy

    Signed. It’s at 41,163 now.

I am so glad they didn’t bundle this with a money beg as so often these petitioners do.

  • swirl

    Mine makes 41,173.

  • Steven Leahy

It’s growing at a rate of 300-400 per minute.

  • Capritaur

    Signed and shared on FB.

  • Disqusdmnj

    Done and done.

  • edrex

    and another.

  • Elsewhere1010

Just signed, it was just over 44,000 signatures. Yay!

  • Silver Badger

I just signed. I can delete a few e-mails. It is important to let the rest of the world know that the haters don’t control America. It is also important that Target knows how much it is appreciated. Forget your petty differences and make your voice heard.

  • Alan S. Lee

Did my share. I tended not to do this sort of things, but this time feels different, and we all need to make a statement.

  • zeddy303

    49k and rising.

  • The Sentinel

I never signed a petition that wasn’t successful.

    • zeddy303

Hope you signed this on then! 😉

  • Queequeg

Just signed that as well as the petition.

  • Hank

    Signed… at 49, 900 +

  • SpiderPIG

Signed it, made hubs sign it too, twitted it, etc.

  • easygoingmister

Signed & shared and hoping for 6 or 9 million sigs total!

  • MarkOH

Signed. And at 5 pm Cleveland time, they have 51,000 signatures. Suck on that AFA

  • People, if you really want to accomplish something meaningful, do this: Find a Target store near to you. Go there. Buy something. It’s easy — they’re like an upscale K-Mart so it’s really not hard to find something you might want or need.

Then go to the service desk and ask to speak to the manager. Tell him or her that you specifically came to their store and made a purchase to show your support for their company’s pro-LGBT rights policies.

Signing an online petition is a complete waste of time and really does nothing lasting but signal to political and lobbying groups “Here’s my email address! Send me MOAR SPAMZ!”

If you give them your phone number too…well, I pity the fools.

If you think you’re being clever by not giving them a real email address or phone number, you’re doing nothing but freeping.

    • Oh, and P.S., if you don’t have a Target store anywhere near you or even if you do, you can do something concrete other than giving MoveOn your email address. You can write an actual letter to Target or call them.

Target Headquarters 1000 Nicollet Mall Minneapolis, MN 55403. Phone number is 1-612-304-6073 for the main Target headquarters. Or call one of the applicable toll-free numbers on this page here:

      • Reality.Bites

        Target also sells online.

    • zeddy303

There are many ways to accomplish things. Yes, going to target to shop is a great way to do that, so is signing a petition, especially if our side got many more signatures.

    • studd55

Speak to the manager? He probably doesn’t even know what the Target policy is on transgender bathroom use. He wouldn’t give a crap. What a joke.

      • TuuxKabin

        That’s the spirit.

  • D. J.

AFA has collected a million signatures?
Hmm…..Why do I think AFA has enlisted volunteers to enter names and email addresses from their own and other similar Christianist group’s data bases to “sign” their own petition?
    I know AFA would NEVER cheat…..right??? /s

    • billbear1961

      Nooooooooooo, of course not.

  • bob

I signed it, but as I suspected with the afa petition, people are signing it multiple times. It was growing so fast I couldn’t find my name in the list. I will continue to shop at Target to show support.

  • JustSayin’

Think Progress is reporting that fake email addresses can be used to sing the Target Hate pledge. They state they signed it three times with names like “this is a fake email address”

    • billbear1961

I knew the fuckers were cheating.

      Right-wingers LIE like they BREATHE.

  • Finally.

  • DuaneBidoux

    Signed & Shared.

  • teedofftaxpayer

I’ve been posting the link on every site I’ve been to today that has transgender in the discussion. Everyone needs to be involved. LGBT means all of us. I was also in a discussion where a transgender girl was talking about the Gays not supporting them-we should be supporting each other. We’re all discriminated against.

  • Bobby Duff

70956 in ONE day for a goal of 75000. I think that’s a pretty safe bet we can reach goal.

  • argeejay

Shopped at Target this afternoon. The place was packed!! Quite a nice experience. Everyone smiled, talked, and even the long lines at the registers allowed for some jovial conversation among the customers and the employees.
