NORTH CAROLINA: Activists Arrested At Assembly Building In Sit-In Protest Of Anti-LGBT Law [VIDEO]

National Center for Transgender Equality head Mara Keisling and at least several other activists have just been arrested at a sit-in at the North Carolina General Assembly building. I’ve posted several short videos of current reporting via Twitter. See below. The protests were organized by several local and national groups, including the North Carolina NAACP, whose head Rev. William Barber is on the scene helping organize the action.

  • I don’t get the religious chants but good on them regardless

    • Tina CRACKA Vane

me other … religion is the cause of all this… a lbgt follower of whatever cult suffer from a lil self hate ….

      • DaveW

And they comment here. The dissonance is deafening

  • Dot Beech

Bless them. Doing that in North Carolina takes courage. I admire them greatly.

  • Ninja0980

    Good for them!

  • Bill_Perdue

Keep it up, brothers and sisters. These bigots are digging their own political grave.

  • CPT_Doom

I worry significantly about any trans people being arrested and jailed in a hate state like this. Hope they’ll be OK.

    • Tor

You know, someone who is strong enough to change gender identity is a tough person, indeed.

      • NancyP

Plus, Mara Keisling is at least fairly tall – 5’10” to 6′?

      • Friday

Of course it’s not their *identity* that changes, that’s kind of the point. 🙂

      We are all watching.

Palin’s quiet today. She must be standing in front of a mirror remembering how to pronounce Alinsky.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

It’s a rare treat for her to enjoy an evening at home when someone in her family isn’t in a jail, courtroom, emergency room or maternity ward.

      • Christopher

        LOL

A difficult but necessary step. They are heroes.

  • bravo. civil disobedience is necessary and vital.

  • rabbit_ears

Its starting to sound like the days after Stonewall. Lots of sit-ins, disrupting political events etc.

    • Tor

I want them to march down the street in high heels and kick the cops in the nuts.

  • djcoastermark

Brave souls you are in NC, Heroes are you !

  • All those arrested deserve a big round of applause.

  • SoCalGal20

    Heroes

  • JT
    • Princess Lardass

And, unfortunately, this will NEVER get old as long as there are people who love their religion more than their fellow human beings.

      • Judas Peckerwood

Religion is just an excuse to feel morally superior so that one can hate and persecute one’s fellow human beings with impunity.

  • rabbit_ears

I’ll just leave this here without comment.

YouTube Adds Trigger Warning to ‘Milo Tosser’ Game Footage After Critics Brand It Both ‘Homophobic and Anti-Muslim’

    http://www.breitbart.com/tech/2016/04/25/milo-tosser-game-criticised-hate-speech/

    • That_Looks_Delicious

Milo (like all the homocons, “ex-gays”, and assorted closet cases who align themselves with the right) already knows that’s what his Breitbart friends really think of him. They choose to pretend it isn’t so. Which is a special kind of masochism – they carry their prison with them wherever they go.

      … and with our colors:
      .

    • ah yes, bob marley the anti-gay religious zealot. . .

  • another_steve

Kudos to my brave sisters and brothers of North Carolina. Not sure, though, that their healthy expression of anger and frustration will accomplish anything.

Patience, now, while the glory and power of the Capitalistic Free Market works its magic and continues to set us all free.

    • clay

Interference with the status quo is the only way to change the status quo.

      • another_steve

I’m not convinced that, in 2016, protests and the like are the catalyst for changing the status quo on social issues. That worked in the 1960s and 70s, but I think it’s a new ballgame today.

I remember also thinking that in 2010, when Dan Choi handcuffed himself to the fence of the White House to protest Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. The sides had already been “set.” What was needed were allies in government who would push through a change in the law.

I’m pretty certain that the hateful and homophobic laws in North Carolina and Mississippi are doomed — not because public opinion will evolve and demand that the laws be overturned, but because market forces will intervene (are already intervening, actually) and will bring about the surrender of the theofascists.

        • Johnny Wyeknot

I understand your point, but I still think a good protest sticks in people’s minds and makes for good historical pictures. Attack from all angles, not unlike combination HIV therapies.

        • Sporkfighter

The people push business. If bigotry meant profits, business would support it. It doesn’t so business doesn’t.

          • another_steve

“If bigotry meant profits, business would support it. It doesn’t so business doesn’t.”

            I agree.

I like to joke that if Starbucks’ CFO determined that there was more money to be made by pandering to fundamentalist Christians than by pandering to the LGBT community, every latte would be served with a plastic swizzle stick depicting Christ on the cross.

        • clay

The protests in the ’60s and ’70s only worked so far as they interrupted the business of those needing to be interrupted. I’d push that to include the pharma companies in the late ’80s, as well. Dan Choi’s protest, on the other hand, was to garner publicity, not to interfere with the functioning of the executive branch. The NC protests by the people and by the business interests are aimed at the legislators, themselves, in their professional capacities– interfering with the status quo.

  • Silver Badger

Past time for NC to remember they ain’t fighting their grandfather’s gay community. The bad old days are OVER. Perhaps the national gay community should join together to totally overwhelm the bigot’s “justice” system.

  • Cuberly

Great job folks! Wish I was there.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

At least fifty peaceful protesters arrested according to WRAL dot com.
They are fighting for all our rights!

  • Yixing’s Fluffer

These aren’t the first arrests in protests over the legislature’s actions. Google ‘Moral Mondays’ and you’ll see that lots of people have banded together to resist the ignorant, bigoted buffoonery of these clods. In particular, Rev. Dr. William Barber, the president of the NC NAACP, should be lauded for his leadership and perseverance. He’s a real treasure.

    • Friday

The ‘Moral Mondays’ Christians are conspicuously doing a whole lot more than telling *us* they’re ‘not all like that.’ (Like *every* Monday, isn’t it? Regularly, anyway.) Much respect there. 🙂

  • ExGayTherapyKills

    Free Mara Keisling now!

  • MB

In light of all this craziness, the report and video from Los Angeles of high school kids whooping Westboro Baptist’ bigot-ass from April 20th is quite refreshing. WBC was there to protest the 1st gender-neutral bathroom in LAUSD, at Santee.
As one of the studenths so eloquently said, “It’s just a bathroom/, People pee.”

~ ~ and a child will lead them.

    • Herald

      +100,000!!!

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I hope more kids flee that crazy cult.

  • SoCalGal20

My local news and traffic radio station (KNX, Los Angeles) is part of the CBS Radio Network and has been reporting about the rally all day. They even had a clip of Rev. Barber’s speech.

  • Octavio

I love it when peaceful protesting get us arrested. That’s when the general annoyance get to be too much for those being protested. So what if it “goes on your permanent record.” Would you want to work for someone or something who would regard peaceful protest as a bad thing?

    • Johnny Wyeknot

I would view it as an ornament on my resume. But no matter how hard I tried, I never actually got arrested at any of the protests I participated in. And there have been many.

  • JustSayin’

OT and not to distract from these great protesters.

Family Dollar has issued a response to the incident in NOLA

    http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2016/04/cashier_refuses_to_serve_gay_n.html#incart_river_home

Basically says they will investigate and that their handbook and policy is that no employee will “comment” on a customers sexual orientation. The employees are also not supposed to act like jackasses either.

The lesbian who stood up for her rights is organizing a peaceful protest on weds. Night and asks anyine who attends to behave and not use profanity or violence to make the point.

    • djcoastermark

Kind of a lame statement for how long it took for FD to respond. Better than well, nothing ish sorta kinda.

      • billbear1961

What it means is they really don’t give a FUCK about us, but they don’t want the bad publicity, either.

They hope this will blow over and they won’t have to do anything about it!

It’s up to US to see to it that this is NOT forgotten, or it will SPREAD.

THIS is what those goddamned HATE laws are ALL about!!

        • Todd20036

To be fair, a LOT of companies are taking us seriously only because remaining anti-LBGT these days is no longer profitable.

It’s a cynical reason for doing the right thing, but I’ll take it.

    • billbear1961

Thanks very much for the update, JS!

  • Sporkfighter

    At last, the NALTs arrive!
Rev. Dr. William J. Barber of the NC NAACP.

    https://youtu.be/i5ZekOCeCXw

    • Claude Jacques Bonhomme

Yes indeed! Joe had the story earlier, but it’s good to see it reiterated.

    • Treant

Well, you knew they’d be along as soon as there were cameras and microphones. They’ll be gone when the news leaves, don’t worry.

      • Sporkfighter

He’s occupying the North Carolina General Assembly building now. That’s enough for me today.

        • Treant

Oh, I’ll take it, but I also won’t expect that the NALTs will be there when push comes to shove. So far, they never have been.

          • Sporkfighter

Check the NC NAACPs Facebook page. They seem to be all over this issue,

          • Treant

Oh, wait, the NAACP? OK, they get a full and complete pass on the issue. Yeah, they’ll be on it like a dog on a steak.

Random Reverend this and Doctor Of Theology that? Not so much with the pass. :-0

      • Friday

That’s not fair in the Moral Mondays people’s case, they really are there all the time. NALTs annoy me, too, but there’s no flies on *these* folks.

      • Ninja0980

They have actually been involved from the start but with gerrymandered districts, not much can be done.

        • billbear1961

In a JUST society, something would be DONE about those gerrymandered districts!

  • Treant

Will there be funds set up for their defense, and can we post that, please?

  • I know I’m stating the obvious, but McRory’s reelection chances are screwed!

    • Sporkfighter

That toilet needs the big plunger.

    • billbear1961

      My God, I HOPE so!

But NEVER underestimate the vile machinations of the far right in this backwards country!

    • Blake Jordan

His “public service” career may be over, but without enough change in the state legislature, HB2 will not be repealed or significantly altered…

Federal courts is the best option to get rid of this law, and hopefully the rest in other states.

  • Johnny Wyeknot

A new day in North Carolina! Well done.

  • History repeats itself, remember scenes from the 1970’s with rally’s, protests and arrests. Sad that in 2016 people are still fighting against hate.

  • Ninja0980

The Supreme Court is truly the only hope these folks have which is why I’m voting Blue this fall no matter what?

    • prjoe

I’d vote for Bo Obama before I’d vote for any Republican.

    • billbear1961

Get rid of that question mark, Ninja!

      😉

      • Johnny Wyeknot

And make it rhyme. Blue no matter who, Ninja! 🙂
