Postmodern Jukebox & Mykal Kilgore – My Heart Will Go On

Openly gay Broadway veteran Mykal Kilgore has gone viral with his “Jackie Wilson-style” take on Celine Dion for Postmodern Jukebox. Those high notes! Kilgore has worked with Welsh popster Bright Light Bright Light and recently collaborated with Scissor Sisters member Del Marquis on his Slow Knights project. The clip has over half a million views already.

One of my favorite memories occurred about four years ago, during the summer. I was stuck in stopped traffic (blocked by a labor strike at a hotel) on that long, straight expanse of Santa Monica boulevard between the end of Beverly Hills and the beginning of West Hollywood. It was rush hour, and I was trying desperately to get to a friend’s party after a long day at work. I was so frustrated and angry that traffic was completely blocked. It was warm out and I had my car windows rolled down. Just when I was about to lose all patience, I heard the faint sound of “My Heart Will Go On” coming from somewhere. I looked at traffic going the opposite way (going west) and I see this guy in a very nice Mercedes with his windows rolled up absolutely BLASTING that song, and belting it out as loud as he could. He was living for it. And then I was living for it.

It was absolutely fabulous. My nerves were instantly calmed.

Never underestimate the power of a Diva’s voice, that’s what I always say!

OK I love PMJB, have one of their albums and will most likely get a few more. Their talent is superb. But someone has to click on this first and tell me it’s worth it. Cuz that song is a complete ear worm, brain destroyer. I loathe it!

    • Sam_Handwich

      It’s 50’s doo-wop style

      Not their best IMO

      • Cuberly

Whew, thanks Sam. I think I’ll pass then….lol…

        • Mark

oh my bleedin ears… that should have stayed a ‘good idea’….

          • Cuberly

I think that could very well be one of, if not THE, most polarizing songs ever. I know people that love it, but many many more that can’t stand it.

          • David L. Caster

All things considered, this Doo Wop take on it is good. Not stellar, but good.

I’m going to vote that you give it a shot…at worst, you’ve lost a couple of minutes (and you can be reading something else why it’s playing anyways). I’m not a huge fan of the original (though I don’t exactly hate it either…sort of ‘meh’), but this version is very fun, fresh and lively. It really does sound quite different from the Celine version.

      • Cuberly

        I don’t know….hmmmm….

Hard to believe, but, James Horner even out sappy’d that song. I saw this in the theater back in the dark ages, and found myself giggling at it. Overwrought to a T.

  • bambinoitaliano

Actually I don’t mind after listening to the original version for like a billion times.

  • Octavio

Well she-bop me bop! It took me a minute before I realized he was singing the Celine thing that makes me hurl every time I hear it. Unlike l’envahisseur canadienne-française this genleman be kickin’ it.

  • bambinoitaliano

If the ship is sinking you might as well enjoy the heck out of it.

  • fuow

OK, I hate the movie, I hate the song and I once left one of Celine Dion’s otherwise totally outsanding concerts at the intermission because this horrid song was up in the next set.
So – having said all of that, this was damn good. Almost made me forget how much I hate, hate, hate that movie, song and rendition which played for like 200 fucking years non-stop in 1997 and 98.

  • Brian in Valdosta

Hot damn!! That looked a whole lotta rollicking fun!

  • Daffyd

Absolutely LOVE it… already listened three times… and gotta say, Mykal is easy on the eyes too!

  • StraightGrandmother

When I heard him sing it, and I did enjoy it, I was thinking I would like to hear him sing that song, Walk like a man, talk like a man by Fankie Valley.
I bet he could sing any Frankie Valley song.
He’s got the voice and the do-op

  • A Big Sarcastic Fairy!

This is much better than Celine’s version.
