REPORT: Trump Is Buying Positive Coverage From Breitbart

If true, a massive scoop from Buzzfeed:

According to four sources with knowledge of the situation, editors and writers at the outlet have privately complained since at least last year that the company’s top management was allowing Trump to turn Breitbart into his own fan website — using it to hype his political prospects and attack his enemies. One current editor called the water-carrying “despicable” and “embarrassing,” and said he was told by an executive last year that the company had a financial arrangement with Trump. A second Breitbart staffer said he had heard a similar description of the site’s relationship with the billionaire but didn’t know the details; and a third source at the company said he knew of several instances when managers had overruled editors at Trump’s behest. Additionally, a conservative communications operative who works closely with Breitbart described conversations in which “multiple writers and editors” said Trump was paying for the ability to shape coverage, and added that one staffer claimed to have seen documentation of the “pay for play.” All four sources spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to jeopardize their jobs; and none knew exactly how Trump’s alleged arrangement with the privately held company worked.

Also interesting: Buzzfeed says that RedState founder Erick Erickson has deleted the below tweet he made on Saturday.

  • Believe me when I say he is ” very rich “.

  • This is too much. Just too much. Where’s the popcorn?

  • Blake Jordan

This does not surprise me at all, but I still believe the majority support of the rethuglican base for Trump is real, even with Breitbart being bought for the “positive” PR.

    • David L. Caster

Interestingly, I notice that the religious-right component of the GOP base does not appear to be in play here as evinced by the fact that those candidates pandering to it are not performing well in the polls. Trump does not appear to be trying to appeal to it either and is still leading in the polls. Perhaps it’s time for the GOP to recognize that the American Evangelical Vote is not as relevant as imagined.

    • StraightGrandmother

You don’t think that the Donald has not impregnated women other than his wife and paid for abortions, do you?

      • Todd20036

That would require a woman to be interested in Trump for a “fling”.

  • David Walker

So “why pay for what you can get for free” doesn’t apply here?

  • Paula

I am unsurprised by this. The Donald seems like the type that will try to solve any issue with money.

    • Stev84

      And lawsuits

      • GayOldLady

        And bankruptcy

    • Reality.Bites

If I may make a slight edit:

The Donald seems like the type that will try to solve any issue with other people’s money.

  • Todd20036

Non-issue. While this would be very damning for a democratic candidate, this is merely par for the course for the tea baggers. Trump’s followers will not care one bit about this revelation, even if they bother to read about it.

    • MattM

For them, reading comprehension is elitist nonsense.

    • No, in fact they’ll be thankful to the funder of their favorite site!

    • Eebadee-eebadee-thatsallfolks

Exactly. Trump will actually brag about it, whether it’s true or not. And this just increases his appeal with his fan base.

Kevin Williamson of the National Review has done an excellent sketch of The Donald’s appeal to what he calls the “trumpkins”:
      http://www.nationalreview.com/article/422116/donald-trump-and-american-id-kevin-d-williamson

    • In fact, they’ll say it’s necessary to ensure fair coverage, because both the MSM and mainstream Republican media are biased against Trump.

  • b

Waiting for the Breitbart denial of prostituting for Donald……crickets.

  • delk

anonymous sources = agenda to push

  • douglas

The Kochs bought Walker so why should we be surprised that Trump bought Breitbart? It’s how they operate.

    • Ginger Snap

And Faux News owns them all.

      • Though they’re rapidly losing that ownership, if the latest polls are anything to go by.

      • GunnaHurt

well, Faux News doesn’t own Trump which is why they’re gunning for him so much. Even a hardcore liberal such as myself saw the obvious attempt to cut Trump off at the knees at that debate. IT’s also clear it didn’t work. He’s the first candidate that’s beyond their control because he’s so rich he doesn’t need them. That scares the shit out of them.

        • Tigernan Quinn

I’m pretty “hardcore” myself, and I disagree. She asked him questions about his public persona – which is all that’s left since no one can get a straight answer out of him regarding policy.

          • GunnaHurt

I think you’re 100% right, but the way she asked him and WHAT she asked him was to intentionally get him to self-combust on stage. Fox is the media wing of the Republican Party and they want him out of the way because they know they can’t win with him AND they’ll probably lose both houses and most state battles if he’s the head of the party. I just think it backfired on them.

          • Sporkfighter

… WHAT she asked him was to intentionally get him to self-combust on stage.”

Fair questions. If a candidate can’t handle questions from the press, who can we expect him to handle really difficult situations . . . like sending in the Seals or not?

          • GunnaHurt

well of course, but he’s not a serious candidate. That’s kinda what she was trying to point out.

          • I think the questions they asked of Trump were entirely valid. But from the synopses I’ve read, it appears the moderators may have been softer on Bush and especially Rubio.

          • Cherry

Are you a fan of Quinn in the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) Mysteries? Just curious. LOL

    • Rambie

This is getting so rich it’s got to be fattening.

      • Or a browm paper envelope…
Oh wait there up in the sky its a super-pack!

  • If comments at Breitbart are any indication, they think Trump is the greatest thing since sliced white bread.

    • Cuberly

It’s wall to wall Trump over there. Any anti-Trump or Trump questioning comments are jumped on rather quickly.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they’re outfitting their comment sections with fake pro-Trump accounts. If they’re stacking the deck editorial wise why wouldn’t they do the same in their comments sections.

    • Ahh…sliced white bread.
It’s all about the image you know.

  • bryan

He will just say Buzzfeed are ‘terrible people’. And up will go his ratings.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

“Buzzfeed is losers, they’d sell their souls to Rosey O’Donnell, who is the big, fat devil and that Kelly chick who is her henchman” – Donald Trump

  • TommyTune

How is this different from what Fox News does each and every day? The only difference, it seems to me, is that they have different sugar daddies footing the bills.

  • Pollos Hermanos

Matches the AstroTurf on his head I guess.

  • bkmn

    Shocked!

  • GayOldLady

Donald Trump’s next tweet should go something like this “The people at Buzzfeed are stupid losers. Stupid, ugly, fat pig, losers. Not incredibly rich winners like me”

    • Just wait. He gets word of such an idea, I’m sure he could pull that off without much of a problem.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

Oh, is this where I should post a comment about how shocking this is? I’m actually more surprised that this didn’t happen sooner. Breitbart and their little lap dog Benny the Buffoon aren’t exactly known for their integrity.

    • Reality.Bites

Only shocking part is that he even had to pay them.

      • popebuck1

He probably won’t have to for long. After a certain amount of time, the mob mentality takes over: they don’t need to understand their orders, just follow the crowd.

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

        True enough

  • AtticusP

You know, I’m beginning to think that there isn’t enough popcorn in the world!!!

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

      You and me both

    • Gindy51

We had to buy a new popcomr popper, ours burnt out during the “debate”!!!

  • SunsetGay

Trump is a crony capitalist and Breitbart is the National Enquirer of political rags. May they burn down the entire GOP and conservative establishment and may our evolution towards European socialism come much faster.

  • clay

    1) as if Breitbart was actually a news agency that would need separation between income and reportage.

    2) Has the GOP announced, yet, the “conservative media outlet” for their 12th debate?

    • CB

      1. And you don’t even have to separate income and reporting if you disclose, and it can be done very discreetly.
      2. No one cares.

  • RobynWatts

Well, when you have money to blow, on things like paid supporters, anything is possible. /s

  • Bad Tom

Ironically, there is a NewsMax ad with a smiling Donald Trump right here on Joe.My.God — “Can Donald Trump Save America / Vote Now!”
    ——-
I know you don’t get to pick the ads, Joe.

  • D. J.

Look at all the media AFA, FRC, etc. operate. Tons of websites, books, flyers, radio shows, distributed especially in the South and fly over States.
But that appears to be okay ’cause Jeebus.
Trump is giving the GOP the drizzling shits.
The sewer is going to clog and backup.

  • David Brock talked about how a few wealthy donors funded conservative books, magazines, etc well over a decade ago in his book Blinded by the Right. Is this a surprise to anyone?

    • popebuck1

He’s turning their own weapons against them. It’s a thing of beauty.

  • gaymex

Interesting the timing…right after the republicans loudly declare war on Trump. LOL. Slug it out bitches. This news, if true, will not faze his base. They can already barely read, let alone comprehend.

  • Cuberly

Whoa. An editorial staff that uses outright lies, and in particular, lies via omission is complaining that they’re having content dictated to them? It can’t be!

There’s gotta be more to this too. If you look at the comment sections in the Trump stories there’s groups of commentors that jump on anyone slamming Trump. And they have very similar approaches in how they accomplish this as well.

    Lordy, popcorn, this early?

  • Christopher
  • this is not a shock.

  • D. J.

From comments, the tea folks are pissed at Fox and RedState. They are pissed at Megyn over the “debate” and at RedState for not inviting Carson.

  • Puckfair52

We must always keep in mind these are degenerates they are not like normal people. Some of them are not at fault they come from dysfunctional families who cultivated their sense of importance!

  • Mike in Texas

So the Republicans are learning the lesson Mickey Mouse learned in Fantasia.

    • JulieBL

Brilliant! Now we just need to find the Sorcerer…

  • Lumpy Gaga

    Trump, Schmump.

    I haz new hat!

  • LovesIrony

there’s blood coming out of breitbart’s whatever

  • Blobby

It’s Buzzfeed. Shouldn’t it be “22 Reasons Trump is Buying His way into Breitbart”?

    • Orly

And you simply will not believe number 13!

      • Blobby

you topped me at my own joke – dammit !!! : )

  • Raybob

10-15 seconds to load a story after a click.

    • Merv99

      Zippy for me.

  • Dreaming Vertebrate

Trump is to Breitbart as Putin is to RT.
Either source will write utter trash if the price is right.

  • GunnaHurt

they can save the phony indignation. As if Fox News hasn’t been shilling for Bush and Walker, Palin and Cruz… As if every politician doesn’t have arrangements with media outlets for positive coverage.

  • Tigernan Quinn

If it were any other site than Breitbart – I mean, I just assumed that ALL of their content was bought and paid for.

  • zhera

Is this shocking? Trump paying? Breitbrat being part of an agenda?

  • robirob

Who gave the order for Buzzfeed to release this “hit” piece? Murdoch, Ailes, Ivanka Trump?

Not that I question the content, but I am sure someone wants to trash Trump in some way and Breitbart isn’t his or her pal anymore either.

    • StraightGrandmother

I don’t think Buzzfeed takes orders from anybody.

  • he already brags about buying and selling political influence and politicians, insinuating some are his fellow passengers in the clown car. he’s a business man, or rather, a bidness man. he’s just buying ad space.

  • Hey JMG, I’m already missing those taglines, like “infighting is funny” that would have been attached to this post . . . .)

  • Daniel

Whazza problem? Money = free speech, hadn’t you heard? Even ask the Supreme Court! Toldjya.

  • If “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” and “Money is Power,” we might conclude that the Trumpster would be corrupting Breitbart with that money, except I have the feeling the folks at Breitbart weren’t exactly incorrupt in the first place.

Of course, where *one* billionaire can play this game, just imagine what happens when Sheldon Adelson or the Koch Brothers get in on the game of buying media outlets and pointing them at Trump.

Why buy advertising when you can own the medium? Either directly, like Murdoch, or indirectly.

  • Ninja0980

He is no doubt paying for some of this but the support for him isn’t coming out of nowhere.
Face it Republicans, this is your base, period.

  • anne marie in philly

    interesting!

  • ExGayTherapyKills

    Give the people a circus.
