Matt Baume: Worst Marriage Reactions

  • Robincho

Memo to self: Don’t EVER get up to pee at 4:11 a.m. and just casually have a look at something like this. Enuresis is to be preferred. At least the cleanup wouldn’t sicken me quite as much as this did.

That just made my day! Matt is an amazing voice for us.

    • David Walker

      And presence, too.

      • Todd20036

You just want to cheapen what he said for your sexual fantasies because he’s hot, you slut.

        Want to compare notes?

        • David Walker

No. No. What I meant was…um…ok.

          • Gene

I will have people, sane ones who just don’t realize that yes, we have suffered (most TRULY dont know this…who told them?) THIS will change hearts and minds.
            .
            And help scarf sales.

  • StraightGrandmother

The whole video was awesome, however I think the best part was the strong close.
“If you are feeling ashamed & worried, maybe it is because your views are shameful”

    • disqus_oCvsL5SBJH

Of course Tony Perkins has used that same line, though, to justify why gay kids kill themselves. They know their desires are shameful, that’s why they’re ashamed. It’s horrible, but… the statement itself sort of smacks as fallacious to me. They’re ashamed because they used to have power and the imprimatur of society’s approval, now they don’t have that anymore, and with that their social power has eroded as well. That they are more concerned about how cool they look than they have ever been about the rights and lives of others: THAT is shameful.

      • StraightGrandmother

OMG, I forgot about that, Tony Perkins saying gay kids kill themselves because they are ashamed, so hey, that’s on them.

Remember that time when it seemed every week or every other week gay kids were completing suicide? When Dan Savage came out with the It Gets Better campaign? Jesus Christ such bad memories, those kids.

        • David Walker

BuzzFeed 10/2/12: “[The FRC] argue that the gay lifestyle is sick and sinful and dangerous and they point to the suicide rate, and then they turn around and do everything in their power to make sure that suicide rate does not come down and to drive it up. Tony Perkins sits on a pile of dead gay kids every day when he goes to work — and he calls himself a Christian. I don’t understand how real Christians let that little fucker get away with that.”

I agree, and as far as I can see, there are 3 reasons they let him get away with it: 1. They don’t know. 2. They don’t care. 3. They’re afraid of “that little fucker.”

    • crewman

He keeps getting better and better. That was appropriately strong. Not mean, but brave, and strong.

      • David Walker

As many of us have become, either by force or by choice. “Not mean, but brave and strong” looks good on us.

        • clay

          Righteous Anger . . . and scarves!

    • Herald

The whole thing was fantastic, but what a punch line!

    • Todd20036

A big reason why the haters keep losing is because the haters keep speaking. The Westboro Church is one big example, but in general, the haters need to convince themselves that bigotry is ok, so they keep freaking talking.

And finally, the apathetic majority started really listening to them, and didn’t like what they heard.

  • Wynter Marie Starr

Matt is intelligent and a strong voice of reason. He cuts through bullshit like a bullet going through tissue paper.

    • BockMcMillan

      Hear, hear!

  • JT

Excellent, Matt! That list of all the things that they say same sex marriage is worse than demonstrates that they are lunatics ranting.

    • David Walker

And afraid they’re losing power (and, more importantly, money). Very afraid.

  • DaveDocSC

I like Matt more every time I watch him. Smart and Sassy!

  • TexPlant

The last line got me – preparing the survival shelter!! Love him!!

    • Ray Taylor

Well since Matt is saving scarves, I’ll start collecting hankies.

      • BobSF_94117

When Matt puts his mind to something, I’m sure he as thorough and industrious as he seems. Proof? Go to the store today and just try and find a scarf!

  • Steven Leahy

Well put as usual Matt, nicely done.

  • Prion

“Discrimination isn’t a contest. Nobody wins when you compete over who suffered more.”
    Beautiful.

  • Larry in Oklahoma

Starting with Harvey Milk (and others) and moving forward, I have to say KUDOS to Matt Baume, Joe.My.God, Dan Savage and Michealangelo Signorile for being (who I consider to be) the main fighters out there in getting Gay Marriage to become simply Marriage. My hat’s off to you guys! Much love to you all, as well.

  • Joe in PA

    Fantastic job as usual Matt.

OT but related, he mentions the Sewers Of Paris podcasts that he does, they are well worth listening to. I have a once-a-week 45 minute commute that I use to listen to them. He is charming, insightful, lets-his-guests-speak, picks-up-the-slack-when-needed kind of interviewer. Really well done.

  • Thank you Matt, wonderful summary!

Not to get annoyingly too-real, but “welcome to our world” LOL.

BTW, Closet-Case Symptom Number One is, uh, exactly this sort of stuff.

  • MBear

    …smacked…down

  • Amanda B. Rekendwith

…from Mike Huckabee, a TV personality who plays a presidentail candidate every 4 years…
    LOL!
    Matt is a gem.

    • Bj Lincoln

I choked on my coffee over that one.

    • DonnaLee

I’m glad I wasn’t drinking then, coffee would have come out my nose.

  • ShakesbearSF

Thanks, Matt, for the inclusion of Compton’s Cafeteria.

    • David Walker

And the Black Cat. That in itself is an inspiring story that not nearly enough people know about.

  • olandp

If you don’t like being called a bigot, perhaps you should stop saying and doing bigoted things.

    • Amanda B. Rekendwith

I wish just once someone would ask them just what they think a bigot is.

  • Charlie

Another difference between oppression based on sexual orientation vs skin color: “You are black? Pack your bags, you are out of the family.” Also African-Americans have found the Christian Church to be a source of comfort rather than a constant source of verbal abuse.

    • David Walker

She has done some very good things for both black and LGBT people since she came out.
        Thanks for posting.

  • KQCA

Thank you Joe J. and thank you Matt B. You’ve made the difference.

  • Schlukitz

    You nailed it, Matt.

  • Queequeg

Matt always gets it exactly right.

  • Octavio

Direct, succinct and very well-reasoned. Smart is very sexy. 🙂

  • 2patricius2

I love Matt Baume. He is always right on the mark with his pithy remarks.

  • Bryan

    Good! Feisty!
He’s having none of their BS.

  • Bj Lincoln

Thanks for including Kent State. Awesome as usual Matt!

  • Matt in PDX

Matt’s reaction to that *execrable* Catholic video is right on the nose.

  • matt n

    that was very good, matt

  • zoli

the stronger, the more fanatical, the more strident, and the more violent a person becomes, citing his/her religion, the obviously more lost and fucked up that person is. together people don’t tell others how to live and don’t pretend to be (a pretend) god’s spokesperson. that would be so offensive to one’s self-respect and sense of what is right.

  • Ontogenesis

I’m a lesbian, but I secretly long to gay-marry Matt Baume.

    Very well-done as always.
