TRAILER: Inventing David Geffen

It airs tonight on PBS at 8PM. The New York Times has a review.  An excerpt: Mr. Geffen’s story starts on a classic Hollywood arc: Brooklyn Jewish boyhood, apprenticeship in the William Morris mailroom, quick success as an artist’s manager and record company executive. But then it refuses to follow the usual rise-and-fall trajectory — it just keeps rising, to …

Frothy Mix: I’d Kill Big Bird

“I’ve voted to kill Big Bird in the past. So, I have a record there that I have to disclose. That doesn’t mean I don’t like Big Bird. I mean, you can kill things and still like them, maybe to eat them, I don’t know.” – Rick Santorum, endorsing Romney’s call to defund PBS.

Live-Streaming Helmet Cam At The DNC

I ran into this young lady several times and she told me that it was difficult to train herself to move her entire head and not just her eyes when she found something interesting. The camera is GoPro and the wireless transmitter is on the back. Somebody wore a similar setup during NYC Pride this year.

Orlando Loses PBS Station

This morning my mom tips me to the news that Orlando’s PBS station has been sold to a religious broadcaster. If the deal is approved by the FCC, Orlando will now have four local Christian television stations. Cable customers will continue to get the PBS station out of Daytona Beach. Television industry blog TVB reports: The Public Broadcasting Service has …

Rep. Doug Lamborn: Kill Sesame Street

Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO) has proposed legislation that will end federal funding for PBS. Because times are too tough to pay for Sesame Street. Lamborn says that with increased government deficits, funding for programs like Sesame Street, for example, is not a priority. “Programs that are of good quality, people are going to support,” he argues. “Why should taxpayers, when …

The Dancing Boys Of Afghanistan

From PBS Frontline’s new documentary: In Afghanistan today, in the midst of war and endemic poverty, an ancient tradition–banned when the Taliban were in power–has re-emerged across the country. It’s called Bacha Bazi, translated literally as “boy play.” Hundreds of boys, some as young as eleven, street orphans or boys bought from poor families by former warlords and powerful businessmen, …

How Auto-Tune Works

I caught an cute segment about Auto-Tune on PBS’ Nova, in which music engineers point to Cher’s 1998 hit Believe as the first dramatically pitch-altered hit single. It seems like every other song on the radio right now uses the Believe gimmick, doesn’t it?

PBS Bans New Religious Shows

PBS will allow its affiliate stations that currently carry a religious show to continue to do so, but has banned all new religious programming. The vote by PBS’s board was a compromise from a proposed ban on all religious programming. Such a ban would have forced a few stations around the country to give up their PBS affiliation if they …
