Morning View – Webster Hall

Built in 1886, last week Webster Hall was granted landmark status by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. The East Village nightclub and concert venue is owned by Unity Gallega, a cultural group for immigrants from the Galacia region of Spain. Unity Gallega objected to the landmark designation, worried that it will damage the resale price of the building. They plan …

Morning View – Bleecker & Christopher

Another shop bites the dust at the gayest corner in Manhattan. I just don’t get it, that’s got to be the third place to die in that location in a couple of years. During the blackout in 2003, half of the Village was fed by the pizza joint that used to be there, thanks to their gas-fired ovens.

Morning View – Gay Liberation

Although George Segal never meant his Gay Liberation sculpture to evoke AIDS, by the time it was installed in Sheridan Square’s Christopher Park in 1992 the disease was at its height, causing some to read an unintended message from the figures. I know I always did.

I took this from the roof of the Archive on Christopher Street. Embiggens nicely.

Morning View – Hello Deli

Around the corner from the Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway, home to the David Letterman Show, is the Hello Deli, site of many Letterman skits. Owner Rupert G wasn’t around when I took this shot. I think Letterman must keep Rupert in business, there never seems to be a customer inside.

Morning View – Floridian Diner

I stopped by the Floridian Diner on Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard, site of last week’s brutal gay-bashing. Despite the $5000 reward offered by the Floridian’s owner, police still have no suspects.

Morning View – Hugh Taylor Birch Park

Father Tony’s place overlooks Hugh Taylor Birch Park, home to gigantic hawks and a huge colony of raccoons that have been trained by tourists to come up to you to beg for Kibbles and Bits.

Morning View – Snow Day

Gotham is being socked with its first decent snow storm of the winter. Other than a couple of dustings, today’s 5-7 inches has been all we’ve gotten. In fact, January set a record for being the first time in something like 75 years that no snow had fallen during the month. If you’re flying today, it sucks to be you. …

Morning View – Times Square

I grabbed these shots this morning on my way home from the Saint’s NYE party, which I’ll review later today once I decipher my notes. The pole behind the “2008” is the one the ball drops down, but I guess security whisks the ball away immediately after midnight, since it’s made of dilithium crystals or gold pressed latinum or whatever. …

Morning View – Chimney Snoop

I busted my 4 year-old nephew peeping up the chimney to try to figure out how Santa had gotten into the house. It’s clear and about 75 degrees in Orlando. And yet I miss New York. Go figure.

Morning View – Chinatown Sweets

The Tai Pan Bakery in Chinatown is an overwhelming madhouse – people are shouting in Cantonese and you have to be alert or you’ll miss your turn. But the pastries are great, if suspiciously inexpensive. Aaron and I got foamy mini chocolate layer cakes – 90 cents each.

Morning View – Buddha

Aaron and I stopped in at a Canal Street temple to say hey to Buddha. I’d never been in a Buddhist temple before, it very much reminded me of my visit to the Stonecutters temple in Chelsea, only this one had a gift shop.

Morning View – Don’t Leaf Me This Way

Even though we’ve had a few (very light) bouts of snow, it took yesterday’s rain to cause most of the leaves on my street to finally give up for the winter. The supers of Manhattan are always glad when the last of the leaves are down.

Morning View – Manhattan Municipal

The 40-story Manhattan Municipal Building was completed in 1915 and is considered the final building of Gotham’s City Beautiful movement. It’s one of the largest governmental buildings in the world and the place where 28,000 New Yorkers get married every year. Another Stanford White beauty!
