Yesterday I referenced this weekend’s New York Times story about the recent suicide of accomplished Manhattan therapist Bob Bergeron. I’ve since gotten a couple of dozen emails complaining about the Times article, including several requests for an open forum to discuss the issue. Here you go.

Soul Train Was My First Gay Bar

My family moved to Orlando in 1971 when I was eleven years old and that presented me with a horrifying dilemma. You see, American Bandstand and Soul Train played in that market at the same time. It was only a thirty-minute overlap, but oh how that 1:00pm to 1:30pm period tortured me. There were no VCRs (much less YouTube), so …

On The Death Of Camp

With the new Broadway-themed show Smash as a jumping off point, Daniel D’Addario writes in the New York Observer: Sontag’s contention that “Camp is esoteric—something of a private code, a badge of identity even, among small urban cliques” suggests one culprit for the death of camp: The mainstream acceptance of gays—a welcome development, to say the least—seems to have come …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“I am a gay person before I’m anything else. I’m a gay person before I’m a white person, before I’m a Jew, before I’m a writer, before I’m American, anything. That is my most identifying characteristic and I don’t find many people who would say that. The polls say the same thing: People do not identify themselves as gay. And …
