Ed Koch Dies At Age 88

Former New York City mayor Ed Koch died this morning at the age of 88. As mayor from 1978 to 1989, the forceful, quick-witted Koch, with his trademark phrase “How’m I Doing?,” was a polarizing figure and the city’s constant promoter. Koch died at about 2 a.m. (0700 GMT) at New York-Presbyterian hospital, the spokesman for Koch said. Koch was …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“Why can’t we, once and for all, bond together to fight for our mutual needs? Where are the leaders who can lead us on this journey to our equality? Where’s our army? I don’t see either. We face this coming election naked and unprepared and as always exceptionally vulnerable. “What does that say about how much the gay population wants …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“At the height of the Holocaust, when Jews were being shoveled into the ovens by the trainload, a great woman by the name of Hannah Arendt, who was a political philosopher – Jewish, obviously, and German – said, in essence, to all of the Jews in the world, ‘Why are you allowing this to happen? Where is your army?’ She …

Larry Kramer: I Do Want Gay Marriage

“We are being bought off, once again, with only a minuscule fraction of what we are entitled to as equal human beings under our country’s Bill of Rights. Believe me when I say that I very much want to get married to my partner, but only when that marriage is equal to what heterosexual marriages convey by law, the law …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“These marriages, in whichever state, are what I call feel-good marriages. Compared to the benefits heterosexual marriages convey, gay marriages are an embarrassment — that we should accept so little, and with so much hoopla of excitement and self-congratulation.” – Playwright and professional nudge Larry Kramer, commenting on New York marriage.

Quote Of The Day – Barbra Streisand

“I’ve endured Larry Kramer’s outbursts in the past, not wishing to dignify them with a response. But at a time when we are all pulling together to achieve such giant steps toward gay equality, it is anguishing to me to have my devotion to this cause so distorted. I think my efforts for the gay community and my immersion in …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“I am a gay person before I’m anything else. I’m a gay person before I’m a white person, before I’m a Jew, before I’m a writer, before I’m American, anything. That is my most identifying characteristic and I don’t find many people who would say that. The polls say the same thing: People do not identify themselves as gay. And …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“Please know that AIDS is a worldwide plague. Please know that no country in the world, including this one, especially this one, has ever called it a plague, or dealt with it as a plague. Please know that there is no cure. Please know that after all this time the amount of money being spent to find a cure is …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“It is remarkable that two of the so-called ‘greatest presidents’ have also allowed the greatest perpetrations and perpetuations of mass murder. Franklin D. Roosevelt was shamefully inept in dealing with ‘the Jewish question,’ (see my play The Normal Heart), most ironically since so many Jews were his most loyal supporters, the Jerry Zipkins of their day. No one really writes …

Larry Kramer: AIDS Is A Plague That Was And Is Allowed To Happen

As the world approaches the 30th anniversary of the first noted cases of AIDS, famed activist Larry Kramer publishes a typically blistering editorial for CNN International in which he shouts that AIDS is a plague that was allowed to happen. And still is. An excerpt: Governments and bureaucrats and presidents and politicians and the people who run this world lie …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“Barbra Streisand is a hypocrite. If she had made my play about AIDS, The Normal Heart, in 1986, when she first acquired the rights, only to sit on them for a full ten years without filming it, she could have done something for gay rights when we were really in the sewer of death. But no, she chose to go …

NYC-based Gay Men’s Health Crisis is under fire over the search for a new home to replace their longtime headquarters on West 24th Street, which they must vacate by the end of this year after losing their lease. According to cofounder Larry Kramer, the new building being considered is unacceptable. Somehow a building was eventually located that GMHC’s leadership felt …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“People think I’m the one who demanded that gay men stop fucking altogether, but you have to realize that in 1981 or 82, one had to be something of an alarmist. People would say you’re going to scare us to death and I’d say that’s what I want. Somewhere in your unconscious brain the specter of AIDS lurks, no matter …

HomoQuotable – Larry Kramer

“We get what we fight for. And we are not fighting. Every single one of us is not fighting. They fight better than we do. There is a concerted and never ending vein of hate in this country and in this world dedicated to keeping us in our place. It is evil to force people to be what we are …
