Morning View – Harry
The Island House has added two more cats since my last visit. This is Harry snoozing at the front desk. His brother William is scampering around under the pool chairs. I haven’t yet seen my favorite, Oliver.

The clubs in Key West close at 4AM so only the totally responsible adults like Father Tony and myself were at the Island House restaurant early this morning. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Yup.

When Father Tony and I drive to Key West, one of our traditions is to stop off in Marathon for lunch at Porky’s BBQ Shack, a ramshackle open-air joint where customers often arrive by boat. The rafters of the place are papered with hundreds of dollar bills autographed by the patrons. Next stop, Island House.

The locally well-known gay owner of a Key West tanning salon has killed himself, apparently (in part) as a result of President Obama’s reelection. Keys News reports: A Key West businessman who for years gave to AIDS Help and other charities may have taken his own life after a bout of depression over a struggling business and the recent election …

Isaac is predicted to grow to Category 1 strength today and tomorrow’s first day of the GOP convention is canceled. The storm may be Category 2 when it reaches the Gulf coast. Later today the storm will hit Key West where Duval Street’s storefronts have been boarded up. A steady line of cars moved north along the Overseas Highway, the …

Today In Mildly Interesting Trivia
Although Florida was on the Confederate side during the Civil War, Key West remained a Union outpost and its naval base was highly useful during Lincoln’s blockade of foreign trade with the South. These things I did not know until this trip.

Afternoon View – Key West Cottage
If you wander down the back alleys, you’ll find lots of charmingly weather-beaten little cottages in Key West’s classic style. This one I noticed on Elgin Lane is far less ramshackle than most and just sold for $800K.

Tough guy Oliver is my favorite of the Island House cats. He’s usually got a fresh battle wound, but will do his best to gain entrance to your room for some ear skritches and a nice curl-up on your bed.
