More NYC Pride 2007 Photos

Here’s a few more pics from last Sunday’s Pride parade. Somehow I don’t have a picture of them, but one of the highlights of the afternoon was finally meeting JMG commenters Crixi Van Cheek and Dick Zinya, who trekked in from the wilds of Orange, New Jersey to join our merry band. Another group of JMG readers were located in …

London Police Thwart Car Bomb
Attempt Near Gay Pride Route

The day before London Pride, today British police were tipped off about a suspicious car parked on Haymarket Street (in London’s West End) along the route of the gay Pride parade. Inside a Mercedes they found gas containers and a large number of nails, unnerving Londoners who plan to attend tomorrow’s event. Police described the bomb as similar to those …

Montreal Pride Back On

Montreal’s Pride parade is back on, rescued by a new community group called Celebrations LGBTA Montreal. (The “A” in their LGBTA stands for “amis”.) Montreal Pride is now scheduled for July 28th & 29th. In May, Divers/Cité (the group that has put on the parade in the past) backed out, citing wishes to focus on their gay cultural festival which …

Grand Marshalls And Atheists

On Sunday I started my day at the Heritage of Pride press tent for the news conference with this year’s grand marshalls: Rev. Troy Perry and Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum. Facing an army of news cameras, they both spoke eloquently about gay rights and religious tolerance. At least, I presume they did, I couldn’t hear a dang thing, despite being less …

Pier Dance 2007

This year’s Pier Dance was a fantastic (if occasionally gruelling) exercise in trying to stay with your friends, as the crush of 5000 men continuously attempts to separate you. It was like being in that episode of Star Trek when they visit the planet where nobody ever dies. Definitely not for the claustrophobic. Still, I managed to hang onto the …

Love Live The Qeens

The four largest Pride events in North America (Chicago, San Francisco, New York City, Toronto) took place yesterday under sunny skies, drawing over 3 million queer folks from all nations and representing all 31 genders . The NYC crowd was estimated at around 1 million and more than a few times we heard somebody say, “Is everybody in the WORLD …

The Gayest Corner On The Gayest Day

This Sunday I’ll be shepherding my festive flock of fabulous – oh wait, I can’t finish that alliteration – fabulous, um, strong gay men to the corner of Christopher and Gay Street to watch NYC’s 38th annual Pride March. History has taught us that corner is nicely shaded, although Sunday’s weather is predicted to be relatively mild, as has been …

Eggs & Excrement At Jerusalem Pride

Jerusalem’s Pride parade was this morning, where marchers encountered hundreds of Haredi, Israel’s bizarre Ultra Othodox sect, who arrived with eggs and bags of human excrement to hurl. Just before the parade kicked off, police arrested a 32-year old man carrying a bomb which he said he’d planned to detonate near the parade to “scare people away.” Two hundred Haredi …

HomoQuotable – Rich Tafel

“Over the next 20 years Pride Festivals will fall out of favor as we move from outward challenges to inward ones. We’ll grow up to understand that pride cannot be given or taken away by others. In our past, we marched to be proud and not ashamed. The next 20 years we convince ourselves.” – Former Log Cabin Republicans head …

Watching The Defectives

Gentle readers, this essay first ran on JMG in 2005, a couple of days after New York City’s Pride Parade. I got so many wonderful emails wishing that I’d made this post before Pride, rather than after it, that last year I ran it again, but on the Friday before the major Pride events around the country began. I do …

HOP Denied Festival Permit

After nine months of planning and meeting with neighborhood groups, Heritage Of Pride, NYC’s gay pride organization, was denied a permit (PDF) by the city to move this year’s PRIDEfest event from its traditional West Village location to Chelsea’s 8th Avenue between 14th and 23rd Streets. Heritage Of Pride maintains that the West Village location is “not safe, not accessible, …

Seattle Pride Saved

On Tuesday, Seattle’s gay pride organization, Out And Proud, announced that they were cancelling this year’s pride celebration and declaring bankruptcy, due to the organization’s $102,000 debt from last year’s event. But upon hearing the news, Seattle’s mo’s came rushing to the rescue, pouring in enough donations to retire the debt by the end of that very day. Amazing! Seattle’s …

CBN Targets San Diego Pride

The Christian Broadcast Network has set their sights on San Diego Pride, today publishing a news story accusing that city’s pride committee of targeting young children for recruitment, under the guise of family-friendly events, using “reformed” ex-gay, ex-con, and ex-drug addict James Hartline as their insider source. Little do many realize how aggressively homosexual communities pursue and recruit youth to …
