Saskatchewan’s top court has overturned a ruling against a man who was distributing anti-gay pamphlets, saying there is a difference between hate speech against homosexual acts and condemning gay people themselves. Bill Whatcott will not have to pay the $17,500 in compensation a provincial tribunal awarded in 2005 to four people who complained his flyers exposed them to hatred, the …

Daily Ungrumble

I’ve watched about five hours of Olympic curling and I still don’t have the faintest idea what the rules are, how scoring is calculated, or even what the actual goal of the game is. Something about putting the rock in the hoose by the end. But I’m happy to keep watching, mostly for the closeups of Canadian champion curler John …

Vancouver 2010 Olympics Start Tonight

Here’s a reminder to set your DVRs for tonight’s opening ceremonies at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Longtime readers may recall how completely nuts I went for the opening ceremonies in Beijing in 2008. Back then I closed with: “You totally have to feel sorry for Vancouver. There’s no way the next Olympics can come close to what the Chinese did.” …

Canada Shaves Its Beaver

Canada’s National History Society has changed the name of its 90 year-old magazine because “vulgar internet meanings” of the original name were blocking the title from schools and libraries. So kids in Canada can’t even look up actual beavers on the internet? Isn’t the beaver the national animal, the Canuck version of the bald eagle? And of course, beaver meant …

Canada Revokes Tax Exempt Status Of Anti-Gay Church

This ought to fuel America’s wingnuts for the foreseeable future. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has revoked the charitable status of Kings Glory Fellowship (KGF), a Christian church in Calgary. CRA cites a number of issues with KGF’s application, but the decision is based, in part, on the ground that certain KGF Board members have spoken out strongly against abortion, …
