It was snowing five minutes before I took this. For realz.

The DVD bootleggers are all over the Union Square subway station today. If you embiggen, you’ll notice that they have everything currently playing the theaters, including Milk. $5 each, no returns. I imagine that taking their picture is a good way to get stabbed, so I snapped this shot from the safety of the upper level.

In the former location for Harvey Milk’s camera shop is the gift store Given, above which is a painting of Milk looking out his apartment window.

It’s a spectacular day today, brisk and clear, so I took a long walk along the waterfront, something I rarely did when I lived here. I ran into JMG reader Billy on the F Line streetcar on the way home, big shoutout to him.

I’m in San Francisco for a few days, staying downtown next to the Embarcadero. I’ve got the balcony door open and the wet fog is just whipping through the room, it’s kinda fabulous. We had an incredible lunch at a place called König in the Alexanderplatz neighborhood of Mitte, the centermost Berlin borough where most of the museums are. Then we rode to the top of the Fernsehturm, the Communist-era tv tower which is the tallest object in Germany. One block from my hotel on Dupont Circle, I came across the L. Ron Hubbard House, ground zero for local crazy. I thought about ringing the bell and asking for Xenu, but there were two MIB-looking guys in the driveway.

The Farmboyz and I did one of our outer borough explorations today, venturing out into the wilds of far Queens. We usually take our bikes on the subway, but Farmboy C (above) blew a tire so we spent the afternoon hoofing around Flushing Meadows-Corona Park (site of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs), which today was hosting the 18th Annual …

Aaron, Chris and I are in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey at the Jefferson Diner, where their dessert carousel featured pies the size of basketballs. If you’re gonna be at Hillside Campground this weekend, stop by Site 62 and say “Hello.” (Yes, I’m live-blogging from a NJ diner. Sophistication!)

The odds of me leaving my nice new umbrella on the train when the temp is around 40 and rain is blowing sideways in icy sheets: 100%. Now I have another crap $3 street-vendor umbrella. Also 100%: the odds of not remembering to put the client proposal in something waterproof. Damn canvas bag.

I hitched a ride back from DC with the Thruple, who brought me as far as their glam high-rise on Washington Square Park, Philadelphia. This is their view to the west, the downtown/Center City area. Independence Hall is a block to the north from here. Fancy!

The Flatiron’s rehab has been going on for, what, 200 years? I’ve never seen the building without scaffolding and ad barns around it. These pics embiggen nicely.
