GOP Ohio Governor Signs Don’t Say Gay/Outing Bill

The Hill reports:

Ohio’s Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed legislation Wednesday requiring educators to reveal a student’s gender identity to their families and allow parents to opt their kids out of lessons that touch on sexuality and gender.

House Bill 8, known to its critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill because of its similarities to a 2022 Florida law, requires public schools to notify parents if classroom materials include “sexuality content,” defined as oral or written instruction, images or descriptions of sexual concepts or “gender ideology.”

House Bill 8, known to proponents as the “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” requires public school staff to inform a student’s parents if the student identifies as transgender or gender-nonconforming. It also creates a mandatory religious instruction release time policy.

🚨 Breaking: Planned Parenthood Organizations Condemn Ohio’s “Don’t Say Gay” Becoming Law

Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, Lauren Blauvelt’s, statement:

“HB 8 becoming law is state-sanctioned bullying following a national trend of unprecedented attacks against LGBTQ+ youth. All students deserve to feel safe and respected in their schools, not targeted by adults who have already taken away their rights to health care and restrooms.”

“This law will broaden curriculum censorship, weaken current civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, impose new disclosure and alternative curriculum mandates on teachers and counselors, and force schools to comply with religious release instruction even during math and science classes.”

“Under Speaker Huffman’s leadership, conservatives will continue to use LGBTQ+ individuals as scapegoats to quietly advance their dangerous agenda of defunding public education. We as Ohioans must be ever vigilante on these layered attacks that are solutions looking for problems.”
