CBS News reports:
A dedication ceremony for a longtime public servant in New York’s North Country was interrupted by protesters on Monday. The event to rename the Clinton County Government Center drew a large crowd rallying against a guest at the ceremony. The center is being renamed for John Zurlo, who served in various roles in Clinton County over the last 50 years.
While the event was focused on Zurlo, its focus quickly shifted to the protest against Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik’s appearance. Protesters zeroed in on Stefanik’s stance on the war in Gaza, barely letting her speak and forcing her to cut her speech early. However, she eventually returned, shouting over the protesters who had previously shut her down.
Lois Roberts, who said she was one of the protesters, told WCAX News the protesters struggled with the opportunity Zurlo’s dedication gave them, saying, in part: “Wecould not pass up the only in-person sighting of Stefanik we have had in years. Our intent was to respectfully be present for Mr. Zurlo’s dedication event; we accomplished that… by being quiet and applauding all the personal speakers of Mr. Zurlo.”
