House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has now broken the record in the House for the longest floor speech ever — an accomplishment held by Republican Kevin McCarthy, who four years ago spoke for 8 hours and 32 minutes in opposition to President Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” legislation. Throughout his remarks, aides have been passing him notes and teeing up content for him to read from.
House Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to speak for about 10 minutes once Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has wrapped up his marathon speech. After that, a final vote will take place on President Trump’s domestic policy bill. Johnson, who has said he has the votes to pass the legislation, told reporters he expects a signing ceremony for the bill will be held on Friday.
