NPR reports:
Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst faced intense questioning from her constituents during a Friday town hall, eliciting shouts and boos from community members. One dismissive comment drew particularly intense ire: In response to constituents’ concerns over Medicaid cuts, Ernst said, “We all are going to die.”
The next day, the senator doubled down on her comments in a sarcastic apology video posted to social media. In the video, she appears to be speaking from the grounds of a cemetery.
“I made an incorrect assumption that everyone in the auditorium understood that yes, we are all going to perish from this Earth,” she continued, adding that she’s glad she didn’t have to bring up the subject of the tooth fairy. “But for those that would like to see eternal and everlasting life, I encourage you to embrace my lord and savior, Jesus Christ,” she said.
