Politico reports:
President Donald Trump on Wednesday offered lukewarm support for Ed Martin, his embattled pick for U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, whose nomination has been imperiled by opposition from at least one Republican senator. “That’s really up to the senators; if they feel that way, they have to vote the way they vote,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office when asked about Martin. “They have to follow their heart and they have to follow their mind.”
Martin previously compared the plight of the Jan. 6 defendants to Japanese internment during World War II. And he’s faced criticism for his friendship with Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, an alleged “Nazi sympathizer.” And Martin, as interim D.C. U.S. attorney, also faced criticism for firing more than two dozen prosecutors who worked on Jan. 6 cases. He also vocally pushed Trump’s claim that the 2020 election was stolen.
