OK Gov Gets Bill Criminalizing Drag In Public Spaces

Oklahoma City’s Fox affiliate reports:

House Bill 1217, which is set to classify particular types of public performances as obscene including certain drag performances, has gone to the governor’s desk for approval. On Thursday morning, the State Senate had a dragged out debate over drag queens. “Nothing in the bills addresses drag or the dress. It addresses the behavior,” stated Senator David Bullard (R-Durant).

Senator Dusty Deevers (R-Elgin) said, “We are living in a time when grown men parade around in lingerie and exaggerated prosthetics performing in front of wide eyed toddlers in public and at libraries and we call that progress.”

HB 1217 equates certain drag performances—though not drag queens—along the same lines as strippers and other exotic dancers like those in a cabaret. It doesn’t criminalize performances happening in gay bars and other performance venues, but instead what happens out in public spaces like parks and spaces freely accessible to children.

Deevers appeared here in January 2024 when he tried to make viewing porn and sexting a consenting person a felony.

In March 2024, he declared during a Oklahoma House floor speech that all federal regulations are “against God’s law.”

In September 2024, he declared that people who vote for Kamala Harris are “possessed by demons.”

As you’ve probably already guessed, Deevers is a pastor.
