Driver In Custody After Plowing Into Liverpool Parade

The New York Times reports:

The driver of a car crashed into pedestrians celebrating the city’s championship soccer club on Wednesday in Liverpool, England, the police said, bringing chaos to what had been a festive parade attended by hundreds of thousands of people.

Video from the scene showed a major response by police officers and ambulances along Water Street in the city center. Several people in attendance told the BBC they saw a car plow into the crowd around 6 p.m.

Merseyside Police said in a statement that they were contacted about 6 p.m. Monday after reports that a car had collided with the crowd. The car was stopped at the scene and a man, who was identified by the police as a 53-year-old white male from the Liverpool area, was detained.

The BBC reports:

Harry Rashid was at the parade with his wife and two young daughters when he witnessed the collision. “It happened about 10ft away from us…The vehicle came to our right. It emerged from just right next to an ambulance, which was parked up. This grey people carrier just pulled up from the right and just rammed into all the people at the side of us,” he says.

Speaking to PA news agency, the 48-year-old says the car was travelling south, down Water Street. “It was extremely fast. Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car.” He describes how crowds began trying to smash the car windows when the driver stalled, before he started moving again.

Sky News reports:

The incident happened as thousands of fans lined the streets of the city to celebrate the club’s Premier League title victory.

North West Ambulance Service said in a statement that it was “currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services”.

“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible,” the statement added. There is no information on the injuries sustained by those attending the parade yet.
