Reuters reports:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has eliminated two committees that advise it on food safety, the agency said on Friday, raising concerns about government oversight of the food supply as the Trump administration seeks to downsize the federal bureaucracy and slash costs. The USDA eliminated the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods and the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection, a spokesperson said.
Food Safety News reports:
“The termination of these two important advisory committees is very alarming and should serve as a warning to consumers that food safety will not be a priority at USDA in the foreseeable future,” said Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports.
“These expert panels provide impartial scientific advice and recommendations to USDA, FDA and the CDC on public health issues related to food safety in the U.S. The failure to recognize and leverage the value of this scientific expertise is dangerous and irresponsible.”
The food safety programs of the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service and the FDA rely on NACMCF recommendations to carry out their missions. The programs of other federal agencies concerned with food safety, including the CDC, the Department of Commerce, National Marine Fisheries Service, and the Pentagon also benefit from NACMCF work.

USDA has eliminated two food safety advisory committees for microbiological contamination and meat inspection. Most recently, they had been reviewing regulatory approaches in response to the fatal Listeria outbreak from Boar’s Head meats and fatal Cronobacter contamination in powdered infant formula

Pro tip: Cook your chicken to an internal temperature of 195 degrees Fahrenheit. Order your burgers super-well done.
And how much did Musk save taxpayers by killing off these committees?
