As President Donald Trump signs an executive order aimed at closing the Education Department, his press secretary acknowledged that the administration cannot do this on its own. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the department will not be completely shut down, which would require congressional action, but said a smaller version will continue to administer “critical functions.”
Students seated at desks surrounding Trump at Thursday’s event appeared to sign their own “executive orders” as the president signed his order that aims to dismantle the Education Department. Republican Govs. Gregg Abbott (Texas), Mike Braun (Indiana), Mike DeWine (Ohio), Kim Reynolds (Iowa) and Ron DeSantis (Florida) were seated in the East Room before joining Trump for his remarks.
