Futurism reports:
As CEO Elon Musk ravages the federal government with chainsaws and fascist salutes, the wheels are coming off for Tesla — literally. New local reporting by League City, Texas’ KPRC-TV has uncovered an unusual heist in which thieves pilfered 44 tires from 11 unsold Teslas sitting in an Amazon warehouse parking lot.
The daring — and frankly kind of impressive — feat has stumped investigators, who say they have no leads, as the building’s cameras weren’t recording.
It’s unknown why the Teslas were parked in an Amazon warehouse, a mere 15-minute drive from the nearest Tesla showroom, though a recent surge of vandalism and protests targeting the EV company might have something to do with it.
Jalopnik reports:
A 19″ Model 3/Y wheel appears to be worth around $350 on the used market, meaning the criminals got away with about $16,000 in fresh Tesla twenties, potentially more as at least one of the Model 3s hit was a Performance model with 20″ forged wheels.
With Tesla sales tanking all over the world, it seems the company is contracting with other businesses in order to find new places to store all the unsold inventory. Investigators say that the Amazon building’s cameras were not recording, and despite all of the Teslas in question being equipped with a dozen onboard cameras, all of them were inactive.
Police also checked nearby businesses, but apparently came up with “no valuable evidence.” According to local users on Reddit, the Amazon center was built but never opened, so it is simply used as a parking lot now.
