MN GOP Rep Resigns After Child Prostitution Arrest

The Minnesota Star Tribune reports:

Republican state Sen. Justin Eichorn resigned Thursday following his arrest earlier this week in an underage prostitution sting. Eichorn submitted his letter of resignation, effective Thursday, less than an hour before the Minnesota Senate was set to take an unprecedented vote to expel him from the chamber.

Minnesota Senate Secretary Tom Bottern read Eichorn’s resignation letter on the Senate floor. “I must focus on personal matters at this time,” Eichorn’s message said. “It has been an honor to serve in the Minnesota Senate.”

Eichorn was released just before 11 a.m. Thursday from the Hennepin County Jail to federal officials. Senate Republicans were ready to bring forward the motion to expel Eichorn and DFLers said they would join them in voting for his expulsion.

As was reported here on Monday, Eichorn is the co-sponsor of a bill that would formally classify “Trump Derangement Syndrome” as a mental illness. The bill was introduced by its other state Senate sponsor on the same day as Eichorn’s arrest. Eichorn has campaigned on a family values platform and has accused LGBTQ people and teachers of grooming children, saying, “before you know it, they’ll be reading kids ‘50 Shades of Grey.’” Eichorn is married with four children.
