FL Bill Requires Parental Consent To Download Apps

Florida Politics reports:

On Monday afternoon, the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee will hold a hearing to discuss Senate Bill 1438, introduced by Sen. Erin Grall [photo]. This bill requires app stores and operating systems to obtain parental consent before minors can download apps on their devices.

Utah became the first state to pass such legislation in February. The Utah bill is awaiting the Governor’s signature. It has already been endorsed by U.S. Sen. Mike Lee, who is expected to reintroduce his own federal bill requiring age verification and parental consent at the app store level in the coming days.

Last year Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Grall’s bill requiring social media platforms to hire an outside company to perform age verification for all users.

Last week a federal judge declined to block that law from going into effect but so far Florida is not attempting enforcement.

In 2023, Grall introduced a bill requiring rape victims to provide proof of their rape in order to qualify for an abortion exception.

Also in 2023, Grall introduced a bill that would fine trans people $10,000 for using the “wrong” public restroom.

Grall last appeared here for her 2024 bill that would place chaplains in public schools.
