Carney: Tariffs Will Remain Until US “Shows Respect”

Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered fighting talk in his acceptance speech after being elected Liberal Party leader Sunday night, vowing to resist US threats of annexation and to maintain tariffs on US imports until “America shows us some respect.”

“Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form,” Carney said. “We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.”

While the opposing Conservative party was polling with a 20-point lead at the beginning of the year, the party has since come under scrutiny over its ties to Trump. The US leader’s repeated threats to turn Canada into the “51st state” have sparked intense nationalism and anti-American sentiment among Canadians.
