Trump: I Don’t Have To Buy Gaza, I Can Just “Take It”

CNN reports:

Trump made no attempt Tuesday to soften his proposal to relocate Palestinians in Gaza and redevelop the land into premium housing, even as his guest in the Oval Office, King Abdullah II of Jordan, suggested the Arab world was opposed. Trump repeated his view that Palestinians should be moved out to “parcels” in third countries, including Jordan. The president brushed aside questions about what authority the US might wield to take control.

Abdullah, seated next to Trump, did not outright reject the president’s idea. But his discomfort with the plan was obvious as he indicated alternate proposals for Gaza would be forthcoming. “I think we have to keep in mind, there is a plan from Egypt and the Arab countries,” Abdullah said. “I think the point is, how do we make this work in a way that is good for everybody?” He later advised, “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

The Guardian reports:

“With the United States being in control of that piece of land, you can have stability in the Middle East for the first time” Trump said. The US president told reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday that the US wouldn’t need to “buy Gaza”, but instead said: “We’re going to take it, we’re going to hold it, we’re going to cherish it.”  “We’re going to get it going eventually” Trump said. He then expressed his belief that Gaza has the potential to be a valuable asset, stating “I think it could be a diamond.”

During the press conference Trump was asked about threats to pull US funding from Jordan and Egypt. The US president suggested he would not need to withhold aid to push through his proposal, telling reporters: “I don’t have to threaten with money” Trump said. “We contribute a lot of money to Jordan and to Egypt, by the way, a lot to both, but I don’t have to threaten that, I do think we’re above that.” Egypt today reaffirmed its objection to any proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza.

King Abdullah posted the tweets below afterwards.

Trump: We’re not going to have to buy, we’re going to have gaza. We don’t have to buy. There’s nothing to buy. We will have gaza.
