The New York Times reports:
Representative Nancy Mace, the South Carolina Republican who in recent weeks has floated a run for governor, on Monday night accused her former fiancé and three other men of having drugged and raped her and other women, and of filming and taking lewd photographs of women and underage girls without their consent.
In a stunningly graphic speech on the House floor that had little precedent, Ms. Mace said the men, whom she named and displayed photographs of on a placard where lawmakers more typically display charts and graphs on policy issues, were involved in the “premeditated, calculated exploitation of innocent women and girls in my district.”
“You’ve booked yourself a one-way ticket to hell,” she said, referring to the men directly at one point in a speech that lasted close to an hour. “It is nonstop. There are no connections. So I and all of your victims can watch you rot into eternity.” Ms. Mace offered no evidence to support the accusations, although she said she had plenty of such material.
The Independent reports:
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson says shocking allegations of sexual abuse made by GOP congresswoman Nancy Mace against four men were never referred to his office. The South Carolina representative accused her ex-fiancé Patrick Bryant and three business of his associates of sex crimes – including rape and voyeurism – in a nearly hour-long speech on the House floor on Monday.
Mace, 47, branded Wilson a “do-nothing” and claimed he failed to act on her accusations after allegedly having “turned over everything” she found. “Did South Carolina’s attorney general have any of these predators indicted after being provided clear cut-and-dry evidence including video, photos and witnesses?,” she said. A spokesperson for Wilson’s office said in response that Mace’s attack was “categorically false”.
NBC News reports:
Mace, who is in her third term, made the accusations during a more than 50-minute speech that was attended by several GOP colleagues, her mother and a dozen other female supporters. “I rise today to call out the cowards who think they can prey on women and get away with it. Today, I’m going scorched earth. So let the bridges I burn this evening light our way forward,” she said in her floor speech.
“We’re talking about rape, nonconsensual photos, nonconsensual videos of women and underage girls and the premeditated, calculated exploitation of women and girls in my district,” Mace continued. All four men Mace named on the House floor vehemently denied the allegations to NBC News.
Mace’s former fiancé, Patrick Bryant, a Charleston software entrepreneur, said in a statement: “I categorically deny these allegations. I take this matter seriously and will cooperate fully with any necessary legal processes to clear my name.”
Mace teased last night’s speech on X yesterday in a tweetstorm that included dozens of posts over the entire day. Of note, South Carolina’s AG is expected to also run for governor.
