Election Denier Bongino Named FBI Deputy Director

Time Magazine reports:

President Donald Trump announced Sunday night that Kash Patel had tapped Dan Bongino to be second-in-command at the FBI, after the Senate confirmed Patel as the bureau’s new director last week.

Bongino, like many new leaders across the Trump Administration including Patel, represents a radical departure from tradition for his role. The FBI deputy director, which does not require Senate confirmation, is typically an active agent with significant operational expertise and experience—something Patel reportedly agreed to maintain before selecting Bongino.

Bongino, a 50-year-old former Secret Service agent turned conservative-media commentator, is instead most well known for his outspoken support for Trump and his frequent spreading of misinformation, including about the FBI.

The Washington Post reports:

The appointment, which places a second Trump ally at the top of the FBI, may add to concerns about the lack of experience among those running the country’s premier law enforcement agency.

Bongino, who unsuccessfully ran as a Republican candidate for a Senate seat in Maryland in 2012 and for congressional seats in 2014 and 2016 in Maryland and Florida, respectively, has long railed against what he describes as a D.C. “bubble.” He has written several books on topics including his life as a Secret Service agent and what he perceived as unjust attacks on Trump.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Bongino criticized restrictions recommended by health officials and described masks as “face diapers,” accusing liberals of taking advantage of the pandemic to enact Soviet-style government control.

The Independent reports:

Bongino began contributing political commentary on Fox News soon after his departure from the Secret Service and had a Saturday night show “Canceled in the USA” with the network from 2021 to 2023. The show saw him interviewing people who he believed had been “canceled” by the media over their opinions.

During that time, Bongino’s channel was banned from YouTube over the proliferation of Covid-19 conspiracy theories on his channels. Bongino, a husband and father of two, became a key player in MAGA circles after he spread false information about the 2020 election.

Bongino appeared here last week when he declared that “we all must suffer” the economic fallout of the Trump and Musk agenda in order to “save the country.” In 2022, he told Fox viewers that the FBI “uses the American flag as toilet paper.” Bongino had claimed that he would run for president in 2024 if Trump did not.
