US Withdraws From WHO And Paris Climate Accord

The New York Times reports:

President Trump moved quickly on Monday to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization, a move that public health experts say will undermine the nation’s standing as a global health leader and make it harder to fight the next pandemic.

In an executive order issued about eight hours after he took the oath of office, Mr. Trump cited a string of reasons for the withdrawal, including the W.H.O.’s “mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic,” and the “failure to adopt urgently needed reforms.”

He said the agency demands “unfairly onerous payments” from the United States, and complained that China pays less.

CNN reports:

President Donald Trump signed actions on the first day of his second term to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement, an international climate change treaty in which nearly 200 countries agreed to work together to limit global warming.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for the planet and humanity’s ability to adapt to the changing climate and the increasing cost of climate-related disasters.

The planet crossed a consequential threshold in 2024 — 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming — that dates back to the day the Paris Agreement was adopted.

Trump just withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement.

The US now joins Iran, Libya, and Yemen as the only countries in the world not in the agreement.
