LIVE VIDEO: Mike Johnson Faces Vote For Speaker

The 119th Congress will convene on Capitol Hill on Friday, with Republicans in control of both the House and Senate for the first time since 2019. The House will meet at noon and hold its election for speaker, with current Speaker Mike Johnson hoping to hold onto his gavel.

Johnson needs to win a majority of the full House to win the election, which would be 218 votes if all members are present and voting.

The House can’t move on to swearing in new members or other legislative business until the speaker is elected. The Senate will swear in new senators when the upper chamber convenes at noon.
