McConnell Furious After Judges Cancel Retirements

The Hill reports:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) vented his displeasure Monday after two Democratic-appointed federal judges reversed their decisions to retire in what appear to be efforts to stop President-elect Trump from nominating their successors.

McConnell called the unusual decisions to forgo retirement following Trump’s sweeping victory last month a “partisan” gambit that would undermine the integrity of federal courts.

“They rolled the dice that a Democrat could replace them and now that he won’t, they’re changing their plans to keep a Republican from doing it,” McConnell said on the Senate floor.

“It’s clear now that they have a political finger on the scale,” McConnell says of these 2 federal judges. “This sort of partisan behavior undermines the integrity of the judiciary.”

Interesting to hear Mitch McConnell lamenting the idea of partisanship undermining the judiciary given that….

….Mitch McConnell is the same guy who made the unprecedented decision to deny President Barack Obama a Supreme Court justice for Donald Trump, and made another unprecedented decision to deny Joe Biden a Supreme Court justice for Donald Trump.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) now noting how McConnell directed the GOP not to even meet w/ Obama’s SCOTUS pick Merrick Garland after Scalia died.

“The decision was made almost instantly by the same senator who just talked about delaying and filling vacancies… not to fill the Supreme Court vacancy.”

“So when I hear the senator come the floor from KY and talk about whether there’s any gamesmanship going on, I dunno…. But I will tell you we saw it at the highest possible level in filling the vacancy on the Supreme Court when Antonin Scalia passed away,” says Durbin.
