Johnson’s Stopgap Funding Bill Fails In 174-235-1 Vote

The bill required two-thirds of the majority to pass. It failed because of opposition from conservative Republicans and almost all House Democrats. Republicans can try again to pass the bill through a simple majority, but that would also be tough and likely to fail.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told House Democrats in a closed-door meeting that he will not vote for the deal negotiated exclusively among Republicans.

The GOP measure includes a three-month extension of government funding, a two-year suspension of the debt limit into January 2027, as well as roughly $110 billion for disaster relief, along with other provisions.
