German Officials Blast Musk For Backing Extremist Party

The Guardian reports:

Elon Musk has caused outrage in Berlin after appearing to endorse the far-right, anti-immigrant Alternative für Deutschland. Musk, who has been named by Donald Trump to co-lead a commission aimed at reducing the size of the US federal government, wrote on his social media platform X: “Only the AfD can save Germany.” The German health minister, Karl Lauterbach, called Musk’s decision to wade into the German political debate weeks before the snap election “undignified and highly problematic”.

Europe’s largest economy is expected to go to the polls on 23 February after the collapse last month of Olaf Scholz’s centre-left coalition. The AfD is running in second place in opinion polls. The German former MEP Elmar Brokdismissed Musk’s comment as “the world domination fantasies of the American tech kings”. Lauterbach accused Musk of election interference and called for authorities to “keep a close eye on the goings-on on X”.

Earlier this year protests swept Germany’s major cities after AfD officials were exposed for a Nazi plot to deport immigrants and native Germans who have not, in their view, properly assimilated into German culture.

This morning it was reported that the suspect in a fatal car attack on a German holiday market is a fan of both Musk and the AfD.

Should the AfD triumph in the election, it’s possible that the party’s homocon co-chair, Alice Weidel, could become Chancellor.

Weidel, who shares two children with her partner, opposes same-sex marriage and other LGBTQ rights and has called for Germany to leave the “socialist” European Union.

Today Weidel posted a video message thanking Musk for sending her a laudatory note. See it below.

“BERLIN, Dec 7 (Reuters) – The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) on Saturday nominated co-leader Alice Weidel as its first chancellor candidate in the party’s 11-year history, setting out its bid for power ahead of a snap election due in February.” www.reuters.com/world/europe…
