PA Fire Department Apologizes For Halloween Parade Float Depicting Trump As Sniper, Harris In Handcuffs

Posted to Facebook by the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department:

We, the members of the Mount Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department, want to take a moment to sincerely apologize for allowing the offensive participants to take part in the Mount Pleasant Annual Halloween Parade last evening.

We do not share in the values represented by those participants, and we understand how it may have hurt or offended members of our community. We’re proud to have sponsored this parade for over 70 years and its goal has always been to support our community’s children.

We are committed to learning from this experience and ensuring that our future events celebrate the diversity and spirit of our community in a positive way.

The annual Halloween Parade is a first come, first serve event and we have traditionally only provided safety & traffic control.

We will be reviewing our planning processes to prevent a situation like this from happening again. Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to make our events more welcoming for everyone.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported yesterday:

An entry in a Westmoreland County Halloween parade Wednesday that depicted a sniper with a gun atop a golf cart and a person tied to the cart apparently dressed as Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has sparked outrage from some community members.

Photos posted on social media showed what looked like a long gun sitting on a tripod on top of the roof of a golf cart. Two people were standing in the back of the golf cart, one of whom was dressed as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. A sign in support of the former president hung on the front of the cart.

People wearing dark suits and sunglasses walked next to the cart, costumed as Secret Service agents. Behind the cart was a person wearing a red pantsuit, who appeared to be depicting Harris. That person was handcuffed and tied to the back of the cart by a chain or rope.

Those behind the float have still not been named. In the video reports below, the local NAACP is expressing outrage.
