The Washington Post reports:
There’s a growing chance that a new storm will form in the Caribbean late this week. And, while uncertainty remains, the system could strengthen into a hurricane by this weekend and emerge in the Gulf of Mexico next week.
It’s an ominous sign for this late in the hurricane season, which has already featured five U.S. landfalls, ranking in the top 5 percent of all hurricane seasons since records began in 1851. If a storm develops, it would be named “Sara.”
An ongoing marine heat wave in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, where seas are much warmer than average for the time of year, will help fuel the storm’s development. Marine heat waves are growing more frequent and intense in a warming world.
The Weather Channel reports:
The broad area of low pressure that will spur this tropical development is located in the Caribbean Sea. It is now being referred to as Invest 99L, a naming convention used by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to identify features they are monitoring for potential future development.
The NHC has scheduled the first Hurricane Hunter flight mission into Invest 99L for Wednesday afternoon.
Computer model forecast guidance indicates this system could become Tropical Storm Sara soon after first becoming a depression late this week. And with relatively low wind shear and record-warm Caribbean water for mid-November, Sara could ramp up to a hurricane in the western Caribbean Sea.
Last week Hurricane Rafael hit western Cuba at Category 3, but fell apart shortly afterwards.
Both GFS & Euro are coming into agreement that Florida sees some kind of impact from #Sara next week. Euro is more Central Florida, and GFS is South Florida. Also both show Sara becoming a blockbuster hurricane in the Caribbean with landfall in the Yucatan. Lots to watch for… pic.twitter.com/e3ubIhqgKx

SARA SCENARIOS: Door #1 could likely become a high-end hurricane when in the Caribbean if avoids land interaction. Meanders some this weekend then lifts towards the FL Peninsula mid-next week. Could be be central or north-central FL? I guess, but that would be unprecedented. I’d… pic.twitter.com/ODyRJlQJXA

#Invest99L is slowly organizing south of Jamaica this morning. It’s expected to become Tropical Storm #Sara within the next couple days and could very well be a major hurricane by the weekend. Hurricane Hunters will have their first mission into this system later today. pic.twitter.com/XPXr2Qm8I3

WED. 11/13, 6AM — Spaghetti models are out, and take future Hurricane #Sara into the central Gulf of Mexico early next week, before pushing it east toward Florida. This scenario would result in our area getting a lot of rain and even some wind. More on #GoodDayOrlando pic.twitter.com/bRWFuVtIBC
