On Wednesday, the Virginia Attorney General’s Office condemned racist text messages from an unknown source sent to people across the state. The text message asked people to report to a plantation to pick cotton. It arrived on people’s phones a day after Election Day.
Greetings, Samuel, You have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation. Be ready at 12 pm sharp with your belongings. Our executive slaves will come get you in a brown van. Be prepared to be searched down once you’ve enter the plantation. You are in plantation group W.
A spokesperson with the FBI’s Norfolk Office said that, per policy, they cannot confirm or deny whether they’re investigating. But they ask anyone receiving threatening messages to report it to local authorities.

A bulletin was sent out to parents in Maryland to warn that “hate-filled messages” are being sent to students.
The text messages are telling recipients that they are “selected for a slavery group and being required to report to a plantation.”
