Walz Hits Vance For “Dehumanizing” Immigrants

Newsweek reports:

During Tuesday night’s vice presidential debate, CBS moderators were forced to cut the microphones of Republican Senator JD Vance of Ohio and Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz as the two clashed over immigration policy. After Vance claimed that “millions of illegal immigrants” had overwhelmed cities like Springfield, moderator Margaret Brennan pointed out that the issue involved legal Haitian immigrants. Vance disagreed, arguing that the fact-check violated the debate’s ground rules.

“If you’re fact-checking me, it’s important to address what’s really happening,” Vance said. Vance has consistently criticized Harris, accusing her of using a “magic wand” to grant legal status to thousands of Haitian migrants, including those in Springfield. Vance argued that this move was an overreach of power, labeling it “amnesty” and claiming it strains small communities like Springfield by overwhelming local resources.

The Columbus Dispatch reports:

Springfield became a flashpoint in the national immigration debate after Vance and other conservative politicians and social media accounts amplified unsubstantiated claims about Haitian migrants eating people’s pets and stealing waterfowl.

“I believe Senator Vance wants to solve this, but by standing with Donald Trump and not working together to find a solution, it becomes a talking point,” Walz said as the candidates sparred over immigration policy.

“When it becomes a talking point like this, we dehumanize and villainize other human beings.” Vance has faced blowback for repeating rumors about the Haitian population that Republican Gov. Mike DeWine and local officials say are unfounded.

Forbes reports:

Vance is largely credited with spreading the rumor after tweeting about it on Sept. 10 to his 1.9 million X followers, writing that his office has received reports from residents who said their neighbors’ pets “or local wildlife were abducted by Haitian migrants,” adding “it’s possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false.”

Later that night, Trump repeated the claim during his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris: “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.”

This was Walz’s best moment for me.
