A pair of Senate Democrats on Friday implored the Justice Department to launch an investigation into a political action committee run by billionaire Elon Musk that has been awarding enormous cash prizes to swing state voters — a scheme which some critics have framed as an effort to buy votes for former President Donald Trump.
“Musk’s reward scheme appears to violate federal campaign finance law,” Vermont Senator Peter Welch and Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal told Attorney General Merrick Garland in a letter dated Friday. “It is explicitly designed to induce people to register to vote.”
The Democratic lawmakers, both of whom sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the scheme amounts to vote-buying, pointing to the Department of Justice’s own regulations on the strategy which hold that U.S. elections should never “degenerate into a spending contest.”
