The New York Times reports:
A Secret Service internal review of the failures that led to the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump at a July 13 rally in Butler, Pa., found that agents did not have the necessary discussions about how a complex of warehouses surrounding the site should be protected.
The most glaring of the agency’s security lapses on that day centers on how an armed 20-year-old was able to climb onto a roof of one of the warehouses, giving him a clear line of sight to Mr. Trump.
Other failures noted in the agency’s summary include the inability of the Secret Service to talk with its local partners over radios and technical challenges that prevented agents from launching drone detection on the day of the rally.
ABC News reports:
The “deficiencies” included a lack of resources to share information, a “variety” of communications channels used by different law enforcement agencies, and the agency’s inability to convey the Secret Service’s “protective needs.”
“Some local police entities supporting the Butler venue had no knowledge that there were two separate communications centers on site (i.e., the Secret Service security room and the Butler County Emergency Services Mobile Command Post),” the executive summary said.
“As a result, those entities were operating under a misimpression that the Secret Service was directly receiving their radio transmissions.”
The Washington Post reports:
The review is separate from a probe looking into a second possible assassination attempt against Trump on Sunday. A Secret Service agent saw an armed man on the perimeter of the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, while Trump was golfing, and the agent fired shots.
No one was injured and the suspect was later arrested. Rowe has praised the agents for their planning and security during that incident.
Rowe has said the July 13 security breach was not a result of a lack of resources, but a failure to anticipate a possible threat. He said the Secret Service began making changes soon afterward, including expanding security for Trump and others under the agency’s protection. More than 40 officials, families and foreign dignitaries have protective details.
