The Birmingham News reports:
Gunfire erupted in Birmingham’s Five Points South entertainment area Saturday night, leaving four people dead and at least 21 others injured. Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the shooting happened just after 11 p.m. in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South.
Initial reports indicate club patrons were waiting in line outside Hush, a hookah and cigar lounge on Magnolia Avenue, when the shooting took place. Witnesses said at least some of the gunfire sounded like it came from a weapon outfitted with a “switch” that converts a gun to full automatic.
Investigators believe multiple shooters fired numerous shots into a group of people on Magnolia Avenue. No arrests have been made. Fitzgerald urged the public to provide any information they have about the shooting to police. Nearby businesses were urged to share surveillance video footage with police.
Birmingham’s ABC affiliate reports:
Two men and a woman were found unresponsive with gunshot wounds when police arrived, and then more gunshot victims were found. Those three victims died on the scene and another died at the hospital. At least four of the gunshot victims have life-threatening injuries. The rest have “various injuries,” police said.
Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the victims were out in the open on the sidewalk and street when the shooting began.
Investigators are trying to figure out if the shooters walked up to the victims or drove by in a vehicle. Police believe Glock switches were used. Those switches are machine gun conversion devices and have been the focus of a recent federal crackdown in Birmingham.
No arrests have been made at this writing.
