DNC Delivers Joyous Roll Call Of State Delegations

The Associated Press reports:

Convention roll call votes can be staid and cheesy, but Democrats turned theirs into the ultimate dance party on Tuesday. DJ Cassidy stood onstage in what appeared to be a double-breasted satin suit of royal blue, spinning a special song for each state and territory awarding their delegates to Vice President Kamala Harris.

What America got was a mashup of an elite karaoke night: Detroit native Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” for Michigan, Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” for Massachusetts and Tupac Shakur’s “California Love” for California. Georgia brought out one of its natives in person: Atlanta’s Lil Jon striding through Chicago’s United Center to the beats of “Turn Down for What.”

The New York Times reports:

The music was mixed and organized by DJ Cassidy, a mainstay of Democratic conventions dating to 2012, who tried to pair the music with the state whose delegates were speaking.

The process of compiling the playlist took about a month, and he worked with each state’s delegation to find a song that captured a spirit of “unity and celebration” and had meaning to the state. (In some cases, he acknowledged, those meanings were obvious and in others “more nuanced.”)

Though DJ Cassidy is something of a veteran of political events — he’s played music at Mr. Obama’s 50th birthday and at a virtual fundraiser for President Biden — he said he left the stage Tuesday night with a new appreciation for the democratic process.

The roll call was wildly popular on social media and spawned thousands of good-natured arguments on the selections for each state. You can see the full list here and a playlist went up on Spotify immediately last night.
