Courthouse News reports:
Huntington Beach will work to fight California’s prohibition on forcing educators to out LGBTQ students after the City Council voted Tuesday night to prepare a “parents’ right to know” ordinance.
Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark submitted a request to prepare the ordinance in response to Governor Gavin Newsom signing the Support Academic Futures & Educators for Today’s Youth — or SAFETY — Act last month.
Council member Rhonda Bolton asked if the ordinance means the city will pursue a lawsuit against the state. Van Der Mark said that the city will “explore any options or possibilities to assist any parents who would like to overturn AB 1955” and start “looking into the problem.”

The mayor last appeared here in March when she approved a ban on Pride flags on city property. The city also appeared here in December 2023 when the town council proposed a ban on Pride events entirely. The local attack on rainbow flags began in 2022 when OAN host Alison Steinberg had a literal screaming meltdown after spotting one. Huntington Beach has a population of 200,000.
Councilwoman Natalie Moser asks Mayor Van Der Mark if teachers could be subject to possible prosecution if they violated Huntington Beach’s ordinance declaring city a “Parents’ Right To Know” city.
“Anything is possible,” Van Der Mark said. “We’re exploring our options.”
