Gizmodo reports:
Tweets claiming that former president Jimmy Carter died went viral on Tuesday, with many of the dumbest people on social media helping spread the hoax–from Laura Loomer to Mario Nawfal.
But there was one person who shared the fake letter announcing Carter’s death who really should know better: Senator Mike Lee of Utah.
Brian Metzger from Business Insider captured a screenshot of Lee’s tweet before he deleted it. And while Lee was surprisingly respectful in his condolences for Carter’s family (considering he’s a Trump supporter), the actual text of the letter should have tipped him off.
The Daily Mail reports:
A letter posted on X claiming former President Jimmy Carter died is fake.
Far-right personality Laura Loomer posted an image of a letter announcing the 99-year-old died on Tuesday and it quickly spread like wildfire on social media.
Even Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) fell for the ruse – along with several media outlets. But the Carter Center and the former president’s doctor confirmed that reports of Carter’s death are not true and his status, though poor, remains unchanged.
Loony Liar Laura Loomer strikes again.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) appears to have been duped by a fake letter announcing Jimmy Carter’s death.
The fake letter quoted the former president as calling his late wife a “baddie” and the “original Brat” who “throat goat Nancy Reagan had nothing on.” pic.twitter.com/Z0GYDCXwNy

Seeing **rumors** that former President Carter has passed, but the “offical” notice has spelling mistakes & apparently was first put out by Laura Loomer. What a ghastly way to try to flip the News cycle. Absolutely morbid 💔- and nothing from AP/Reuters, etc…
