CNN reports:
The weekend is off to a sizzling start as more than one-third of US residents face heat advisories and additional cities are expected to see record temperatures in the coming days.
The list includes customarily hot Las Vegas, where temperatures are expected to be near 114 degrees Saturday and even hotter Sunday, when it could break the daily record of 116.
Nearly 130 million people in both the West and East are under heat alerts across 18 states and the District of Columbia. Extreme heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, leaving hundreds of people dead each year, according to the weather service.
The Associated Press reports:
Records tumbled across the West as a slow-moving heat wave of potentially historic proportions tightened its grip from the Pacific Northwest to Arizona on Friday.
One of the hottest places on Earth, California’s Death Valley, shattered the previous record high for the date by 5 degrees — with the mercury climbing to 127 Fahrenheit (52.8 Celsius). The old mark of 122 (50 C) last was tied in 2013.
There was also a record high for the date of 118 (47.7 C) in Phoenix, where highs of 115 (46.1 C) or hotter were forecast through Wednesday. It was 124 (51.1) in Palm Springs, California.
ABC News reports:
Absurd heat continues across a large portion of the country this weekend, with many locations from coast to coast already setting all-time record high temperatures.
Raleigh, North Carolina, not only set the record for their hottest temperature on record with 106 degrees on Friday, but the city also recorded its highest heat index of 118 degrees during the afternoon. Records for Raleigh go back to 1887, meaning Friday was the hottest day there in at least 137 years.
It’s official. Palm Springs has hit 124 degrees (so far) today, breaking their all-time record high of 123 degrees. A few other locations also broke or tied their daily high temperature records. A complete list can be found here: https://t.co/MGVaP7lxmb pic.twitter.com/9GRax58ihi
