Abbott At RNC: Biden Is “Welcoming Rapists” Into Texas

“When Biden took 50 acres of Texas border property to illegally process up to 5,000 illegal immigrants a day, I directed the Texas National Guard to take back our land and wire it shut,” Abbott said.

He also accused the president of “welcoming into our country rapists, murderers, even terrorists.” Governor Abbott talked about Houston murder victim, Jocelyn Nungaray, who was strangled to death, her body bound and left in a creek.

“Raped and murdered by two illegal immigrants. She’s one of thousands whose lives have been destroyed by Joe Biden’s open border policies,” Abbott said. “To make matters even worse, Biden is even fighting tooth and nail to stop Texas and other Republican states from securing our own borders.”

Like Senator Cruz before him, Abbott invoked the death of Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old who was found raped and murdered in Houston last month. Two undocumented immigrants from Venezuela were arrested in connection to the crimes.

Nungaray’s death has become a morbid cause célèbre for nativist conservatives looking to stoke immigration fears. Compared to U.S. citizens, however, immigrants are less likely to commit crimes, and crime overall has decreased in liberal cities where most immigrants resettle.

What’s more is that Texas’ border communities have not observed a corresponding surge in violent crime, according to Texas Department of Public Safety data.

You will recall that in 2021, Abbott vowed that banning abortion in Texas would somehow “eliminate rape.”

After passing the country’s strictest abortion ban, Gov. Greg Abbott pledged to “eliminate rape” in Texas.
