Mashable reports:
X, formerly Twitter, has officially started hiding public “likes” on posts. X’s director of engineering Haofei Wang confirmed the news, saying in a post, “Public likes are incentivizing the wrong behavior. For example, many people feel discouraged from liking content that might be ‘edgy’ in fear of retaliation from trolls, or to protect their public image. You’ll be able to like without worrying who might see it.”

Aside from protecting people from backlash for liking, say, pro-Hitler and racist content, this change will also dissuade users from encouraging content that that they agree with since likes will now be anonymous.
But obviously, the main intent of this move is to elevate the posts of extremists, as you can plainly see by the post below by X’s official account.
Twitter X making Likes Private is a transformative change that changes the fundamentals of the app. Does @elonmusk understand that? Likes was honestly a way for people to interact with each other.
Feels like likes being private is a gotcha catastrophe waiting to explode. pic.twitter.com/rzpbVqPws0

Important to allow people to like posts without getting attacked for doing so! https://t.co/3O1bG7wIGe

Just got the notification that "My likes are private now". No indication of how to undo that.
This is just more childish Elon nonsense. He got burned for liking a Nazi post, and now he wants to make all "likes" private so he can like Nazi posts without being canceled. FUCK HIM.

Seems like this is going to lower engagement across the board. If you want to let your followers know something is really good without retweeting to turn them on to it, likes won’t work. Not much purpose for having them. All so nobody can see a certain person likes horrible shit? pic.twitter.com/hfVoE3bvU5
