Slovakian PM Shot In Apparent Assassination Attempt

The Associated Press reports:

Media reports say Slovakia’s populist Prime Minister Robert Fico was injured in a shooting and taken to hospital. The incident took place in the town of Handlova, some 150 kilometers northeast of the capital, according to the news television station TA3. A suspect has been detained, it said.

Deputy speaker of parliament Lubos Blaha confirmed the incident during a session of Parliament and adjourned it until further notice, the Slovak TASR news agency said. The incident took place in front of the local House of Culture, where Fico came to meet with supporters. Police sealed off the scene.

The cult is already busy on Twitter, claiming that Fico was shot for rejecting a pandemic accord proposed by the World Health Organization that has been fiercely opposed by US right wingers and hate groups such as the Liberty Counsel and the Family Research Council.

Fico appeared here last year when he called adoption by same-sex couples a “perversion” and vowed to block attempts to legalize same-sex marriage.

Last month Fico halted Slovakia’s aid to Ukraine.

Slovakia joined the European Union and NATO in 2004.
