Florida Politics reports:
A bill that would protect historical memorials, including controversial monuments to the Confederacy erected after the Civil War by White citizens’ groups, moved through a committee in the Senate, powered by a Republican supermajority on the Senate Committee on Governmental Oversight and Accountability.
Sen. Jonathan Martin’s bill (SB 1122) would impose penalties on local officials who removed those and other historical monuments after July 1, 2024.
That mirrors a House companion in key ways, including potential removal from office by the Governor, as well as civil penalties and required restitution for monument restoration from the responsible lawmakers’ personal accounts.

Martin first appeared here in 2022 when as chairman of the Lee County GOP he introduced a resolution banning federal agents from Florida and declaring WHO to be a terrorist organization.
Last year his bill shielding DeSantis’s travel records and the names of visitors to the governor’s mansion was overwhelming approved.
Martin is the author of the new Florida law allowing the death penalty for child molesters. The first such execution is already in the works.
Earlier this month, Martin filed a bill that would ban state agencies and contractors from recognizing the identities of transgender state employees.
